When shipping your vehicle to or from Puerto Rico, understanding the insurance coverage that protects your car during transit is just as important as selecting the right shipping method. While Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, transporting vehicles across maritime routes presents unique considerations that differ from standard continental auto transport. Whether you’re relocating to San Juan, transporting your vehicle to the mainland, or auto shipping for business purposes, proper insurance coverage ensures your peace of mind throughout the shipping process.

Car Shipping Insurance Basics for Puerto Rico

Shipping a vehicle to Puerto Rico involves unique considerations since it combines overland and maritime transportation. During its journey on an ocean carrier, your vehicle will be exposed to saltwater, maritime conditions, and multiple handling points. Dedicated shipping insurance is essential for proper protection.

Types of Insurance Coverage Available

When shipping your vehicle to or from Puerto Rico, several insurance options protect your investment:

Basic Cargo Insurance: This foundational coverage protects your vehicle against damage that occurs during loading, transport, or unloading. Included with most shipments, it covers damages directly caused by the carrier during handling and transit.

Liability Coverage: Focuses on the carrier’s legal responsibility to compensate you for damage to your vehicle during transport. Coverage limits and specific protections vary by carrier.

Comprehensive Coverage: This broader option extends protection beyond basic cargo insurance to include damages from external factors such as weather events, natural disasters, and other circumstances beyond the carrier’s direct control.

Gap Coverage: Essential for newer or financed vehicles, this covers the difference between insurance payouts and your remaining loan balance in case of severe damage or total loss during shipping.

Your selection should align with your vehicle’s value and your personal comfort with potential risks during transport.

Cost Factors and Coverage Options for Puerto Rico Auto Transport

The cost of insurance for Puerto Rico car shipping varies based on several factors, including your vehicle’s value, the shipping route, and the level of coverage selected. Understanding these factors helps you budget appropriately for your auto transport needs.

Additional Insurance Coverage Costs

Enhanced protection for Puerto Rico auto transport is available through additional insurance coverage options. These supplemental plans provide more comprehensive protection with higher coverage limits than basic liability alone.

Pricing for additional coverage is typically calculated as a percentage of your vehicle’s declared value, with various tiers available to match different needs and budgets. Though this increases upfront costs, it significantly reduces financial exposure during transit.

Many drivers find the additional peace of mind justifies the incremental cost. When you book with an auto shipping company, you’ll have the opportunity to select coverage that best matches your specific needs.

Factors That Affect Insurance Premiums

Several key factors influence the cost of car shipping insurance for Puerto Rico routes:

Vehicle Value: Higher-value vehicles naturally cost more to insure due to increased potential replacement or repair costs.

Vehicle Type: Specialty vehicles, classic cars, or vehicles with modifications may require specialized coverage at higher rates.

Vehicle Size: Larger vehicles (over 900 cubic feet) often require special handling equipment and accommodations, which can affect both shipping rates and insurance premiums.

Shipping Route: Routes with higher historical claim rates may carry higher insurance premiums.

Shipping Method: Different shipping methods (RORO vs. container) may affect insurance costs based on their relative risk profiles.

Shipping Season: Rates may fluctuate during hurricane season (June through November) when maritime risks increase.

How to Protect Your Vehicle During Puerto Rico Auto Transport

Documentation Required for Insurance Claims

Proper documentation is essential for successful insurance claims. Before shipping your vehicle to Puerto Rico, gather and maintain the following documentation:

Pre-shipping Inspection Report: This detailed report documents your vehicle’s condition prior to transport and serves as the baseline for identifying any transport-related damage.

Bill of Lading: This transport document includes vehicle condition notes and is signed by both you and the carrier representative.

Photos and Video: Comprehensive visual documentation of your vehicle from multiple angles provides indisputable evidence of its pre-shipping condition.

Shipping Contract: This document outlines the terms of service, including insurance coverage details and claim procedures.

Vehicle Valuation Documentation: For high-value vehicles, professional appraisals or valuation reports may be required to support claims for significant damage.

Keep copies of all documentation in a secure location and maintain digital backups when possible. Having this documentation readily available streamlines the claims process and increases the likelihood of fair compensation in the event of damage.

Pre-shipping Vehicle Preparation Tips

Proper preparation of your vehicle before shipping reduces the risk of damage while ensuring a seamless car shipping experience. Follow these essential preparation steps:

Thoroughly clean your vehicle inside and out

Remove all personal belongings, as these items are typically not covered by transport insurance

Secure or remove loose parts and custom accessories that could become damaged during transit

Disable alarms and provide spare keys to avoid battery drainage or access issues

Check and document fluid levels, noting any existing leaks or mechanical issues

Make sure the gas tank is about a quarter full — enough to operate, but not so much as to add unnecessary weight

Ensure tires are properly inflated and in good condition to facilitate loading and unloading

Shipping an electric vehicle requires special preparation and considerations that differ from traditional gasoline-powered cars. Whether you’re relocating within the mainland United States, purchasing an electric vehicle from a distant location, or planning a move to Puerto Rico, proper preparation ensures your electric car arrives at its destination in pristine condition and ready for the road. This comprehensive guide will help you navigate the nuances of preparing for electric car shipping, ensuring a smooth and worry-free transport experience.

Electric Vehicle Transport Requirements

Electric vehicles present unique challenges during transport due to their battery systems, specialized components, and often higher value compared to conventional vehicles. Their distinct weight distributions and center of gravity affect how they must be secured during transport to prevent shifting or damage. Additionally, EVs have regenerative braking systems that function differently from conventional brakes, which can impact loading and unloading procedures.

Most auto transport carriers can handle electric vehicles, but it’s crucial to inform your shipping provider that they’ll be transporting an EV so they can prepare the appropriate equipment and ensure their team understands proper handling techniques.

Special Considerations for EV Batteries

The lithium-ion battery pack in your electric vehicle requires specific attention when preparing for auto transport. Temperature management is critical during shipping, as extreme heat or cold can affect battery performance and potentially cause damage. For long-distance transport, especially through regions with temperature extremes, enclosed transport offers better protection from environmental elements.

Battery charge levels also require careful consideration before shipping. Most experts recommend maintaining a charge level between 30% and 80% during transport – this range offers the optimal balance between having sufficient power for any necessary movement while avoiding stress on either a fully charged or nearly depleted battery. Some EVs also have specific transport or “shipping modes” that can be activated to minimize battery drain during transit.

Insurance and Documentation for Electric Car Transport

Proper documentation and insurance coverage are particularly important when shipping high-value electric vehicles. Car shipping generally includes basic cargo insurance and liability coverage to protect vehicles against damage during transit, but you may want to look into additional insurance coverage. Consider a comprehensive shipping insurance policy that specifically acknowledges the risks of transporting an EV. Before shipping, gather all relevant documentation, including your vehicle’s title or lease agreement, registration, and insurance information.

Take time to review the shipping company’s insurance policy to understand coverage limits and deductibles. For EVs still under manufacturer warranty, check whether the warranty covers potential issues that might arise during shipping, as some manufacturers have specific guidelines regarding vehicle transport.

Choosing Between RoRo and Container Shipping

When shipping an electric vehicle to Puerto Rico, you’ll need to decide between Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) and container shipping options. RoRo involves driving your vehicle directly onto specialized vessels using built-in ramps, where it’s secured on deck for the journey. This method is typically more economical and offers efficient loading and unloading, reducing overall transit time. For standard EVs without extensive modifications, RoRo provides a cost-effective solution with regular sailing schedules to San Juan.

Container shipping offers superior protection for your electric vehicle by completely enclosing it within a sealed container during ocean transit. This method provides enhanced security and complete shelter from marine elements, salt air, and weather conditions that could potentially affect sensitive electric components and battery systems. While generally more expensive than RoRo, container shipping is particularly beneficial for high-value electric cars, rare models, or those with extensive modifications. For premium EVs with sophisticated battery technology, the additional protection of container shipping can be well worth the investment despite the higher cost.

Preparing Your Electric Vehicle for Shipping

Taking the time to prepare your EV correctly can help prevent potential issues, simplify the entire shipping process, and ensure it arrives in excellent condition. Understanding the fundamentals of preparing electric car shipping starts with proper battery management, securing accessories, and documenting your vehicle’s condition.

Pre-Transport Battery Charging Guidelines

Managing your vehicle’s battery charge level is one of the most critical aspects of preparation. When transported, your EV should have a battery charge between 20% and 50%, as this range is considered optimal for battery health during periods of inactivity. Sufficient power allows transport personnel to safely maneuver your vehicle on and off the vessel when needed, while avoiding a fully charged battery prevents unnecessary stress on cells during transit and reduces the risk of thermal runaway.

If your electric vehicle offers a transport or shipping mode in its settings, activate this feature according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This special mode is designed to minimize battery drain and protect the battery management system during transport.

Securing Loose Items and Accessories

Before shipping your electric vehicle, remove all personal belongings and loose items from both the interior and exterior of the car. Pay special attention to EV-specific accessories such as charging cables, adapters, and portable chargers — these items should be removed and transported separately to prevent potential damage to these valuable accessories and remove any risk of them interfering with the vehicle’s electronic systems.

Secure or remove any aftermarket additions or detachable components specific to your EV model. Remember that shipping companies typically prohibit personal items in vehicles during transport due to insurance limitations and regulatory requirements, and extra weight from personal belongings can affect loading procedures.

Recording Pre-Existing Damage and Vehicle Condition

Thoroughly documenting your electric vehicle’s condition before shipping provides important protection and peace of mind. Conduct a comprehensive inspection, paying special attention to the exterior finish, wheels, windows, and any visible parts of the battery housing or charging components. Take clear, date-stamped photographs from multiple angles, capturing any existing scratches, dents, or other imperfections.

During the inspection, record the odometer reading and the battery’s current state of health if your vehicle provides this information. When your transport company arrives, complete their condition report, noting any discrepancies between their assessment and yours. Keep a copy of this report along with your photos until after delivery and inspection of your vehicle at its destination.

Selecting the Right Auto Transport Company

Finding a qualified auto transport company with EV experience is essential for a successful shipping experience. Not all transport providers have the specialized knowledge required for properly handling and securing electric vehicles during transit.

Evaluating EV Transport Experience and Expertise

When researching potential auto transport companies, ask about their experience with electric vehicles similar to yours. Experienced providers will understand the unique requirements of shipping EVs, including proper securing methods that account for their weight distribution and battery location. They should also be familiar with any special precautions needed for your particular make and model.

Look for companies that specifically mention electric vehicle transport in their services and ask detailed questions about their handling procedures. A knowledgeable provider will be able to explain how they address the unique aspects of EV transport, including battery safety considerations, charging requirements, and proper loading techniques that protect sensitive undercarriage components.

Comparing Shipping Costs and Services

Shipping costs for EVs often differ from traditional vehicles due to their weight, value, and specific handling requirements. When comparing quotes, ensure you’re evaluating comparable service levels across providers.

Beyond the base price, evaluate what additional services each company offers. Some may provide more frequent updates, guaranteed pickup and delivery windows, or specialized handling that benefits electric vehicles. The lowest quote isn’t always the best value, especially when shipping a high-value EV with complex systems.

Reading Reviews and Verifying Credentials

A reputable auto transport company should have positive reviews, particularly from customers who have shipped electric vehicles. Look for specific mentions of EV shipping experiences in customer feedback and pay attention to how companies responded to any issues that arose during transport. This can provide insight into their customer service quality and problem-solving abilities.

Verify that any company you consider is properly licensed, insured, and registered with the Department of Transportation (DOT). Check their MC (Motor Carrier) number and DOT number through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration website to confirm their operating authority and safety record. A legitimate company will readily provide this information and have no issues with you verifying their credentials.

What does your fuel pump do?

A fuel pump is a critical component in a car’s fuel delivery system, responsible for supplying a continuous and pressurized flow of fuel from the gas tank to the engine. Its primary function is to ensure that the engine receives the right amount of fuel at the correct pressure, allowing the engine to run smoothly and efficiently.

Located inside or near the gas tank, the fuel pump has an inlet that draws gasoline from the tank. The gasoline is then sent to the pump’s internal filter to remove any debris or contaminants. The fuel pump pressurizes the gasoline to a specific level, typically between 30 and 80 psi (pounds per square inch), depending on the vehicle’s design and engine requirements. This pressurization is necessary to ensure that the fuel is delivered with enough force to atomize and mix with air in the engine’s combustion chamber.

The pressurized fuel is sent through fuel lines to the engine, where it enters the fuel rail. From there, individual fuel injectors distribute the fuel directly into each cylinder’s intake port or combustion chamber, allowing for precise control over the fuel-air mixture. The fuel pump’s operation is often controlled by the engine control unit (ECU) or engine management system. It adjusts the pump’s speed and timing based on various factors like engine load, throttle position, and RPM to optimize fuel delivery and maintain proper air-fuel ratios under different driving conditions.

Signs that you need to have your fuel pump replaced

A weakening fuel pump may not provide a consistent flow of fuel to the engine, leading to intermittent sputtering or even stalling while driving, especially at higher speeds or when accelerating. As the fuel pump’s efficiency declines, you may notice a significant loss of engine power, making it difficult to accelerate or maintain speed.

A failing fuel pump can cause the engine to surge, with noticeable fluctuations in power delivery while driving at a constant speed. If your vehicle struggles to start or requires multiple attempts, it could be a sign that the fuel pump is failing to deliver the necessary fuel for ignition. A rough or uneven idle, where the engine shakes or runs erratically when at a standstill, can be indicative of fuel delivery problems caused by a failing fuel pump.

A worn-out fuel pump may not maintain the optimal fuel pressure, leading to decreased fuel efficiency and increased fuel consumption. A high-pitched whining noise coming from the rear of the vehicle (near the gas tank) while the engine is running can be a sign of a failing fuel pump. This noise may increase with engine speed.

A malfunctioning fuel pump can trigger the check engine light on your dashboard. To diagnose the specific issue, it’s essential to have the vehicle’s onboard diagnostic system scanned for trouble codes. Some fuel pumps fail when they overheat, causing the vehicle to stall or become difficult to restart in hot weather or after extended periods of driving.

How much does it cost to replace a fuel pump?

The cost to replace a fuel pump can vary widely depending on several factors, including the make and model of your vehicle, labor costs in your area, and whether you choose an OEM or aftermarket fuel pump. On average, you can expect to pay between $300 to $1,000 or more for the total replacement cost.

To get an accurate estimate for replacing your specific vehicle’s fuel pump, it’s advisable to contact local auto repair shops or mechanics. They can provide you with a detailed breakdown of the costs and help you choose the best replacement options for your budget and vehicle needs. Keep in mind that it’s essential to address fuel pump issues promptly to avoid further damage and ensure the safe and reliable operation of your vehicle.

Protect your interior

You can look at seat covers for your vehicle’s seats like couch covers. They will help the interior of your car potentially last forever without stains or damage. However, seat covers for your car actually look good and can add to your car’s overall aesthetic unlike plastic couch covers. They are also very comfortable as well. They can even increase comfort and lessen tension and stress on your back as you drive.

Unless you are meticulous about not having food, drink and smoking in your car, your interior will likely incur some damage or stains over the years. Even if you are, dirt and other things from you or your passengers clothing can unknowingly stain or damage your car seats material. That is why car seat covers are the best option in terms of protecting your interior. Anything like a spill, tear or burn becomes much less of an issue when it affects just one car seat cover. Obviously, this will also save you a bunch of money in the process.

Inexpensive replacement

Seat covers can save you money in a couple of ways, not just by protecting your interior. By keeping your interior in mint condition, they prevent unnecessary depreciation which helps keep the resale value of your car high. Even if you do damage your car’s interior and then get it reupholstered, it will likely not recover the full depreciation of having to make that repair. They also can spare you the cost of getting your car detailed as you can hand wash or machine wash them on a gentle cycle. As was previously stated, seat covers can save you a ton of money when you can avoid reupholstering a seat. The cost of reupholstering a seat can be five hundred dollars or even more while a car seat cover typically costs between one or two hundred dollars.

Wrapping up

Car seat covers can actually save you a bunch of time and money. They will potentially protect your seats from stains, tears and burns. Seat covers can also be easily washed. The expenses that they can spare you are depreciation of your car’s value, having to get it detailed and/or having to get one or more seats reupholstered.

Legal use of your hazard lights

Your hazard lights are crucial to your safety because they allow you to signal to other drivers that there is a hazard associated with your vehicle and that they should use caution when driving near or around you. If you are in a situation where you are actively driving and are using your hazards, you should be driving slowly (under the speed limit), in the right-most lane and with extreme caution.

There are several situations where it is legal to be using your hazard lights. If your car is disabled or unable to drive on or near a roadway, this would call for legal use of your hazards. If you must pull over onto the shoulder of the road for an emergency, you should legally leave your hazards on. That would include when you are pulled over by the police or if you are changing a tire. In certain situations, you can legally use your hazards during an official funeral procession.

Advice for using your hazards

Always be smart when you are using your hazards. However, it is equally important to be informed about your hazard lights and the laws about the in your area. For example, some US states have laws regarding the speed you must be driving under in order to use your hazards. So, if you are driving over twenty-five miles per hour and using your hazards for any reason, you can be ticketed in those states.

In Puerto Rico hazard light use is never permitted while you are driving. However, this law is not strictly enforced. So, in Puerto Rico, you can use your hazards when you are stopped or pulled over. If you do so while you are driving, you are technically risking a ticket.

Wrapping up

Your hazard lights will give you the best chance of avoiding being struck by another vehicle when you are pulled off on the side of the road for an emergency reason. Be sure that they are always in working order because you never know when you might end up needing them. However, be sure that you do not use them improperly because you can end up getting pulled over and getting a ticket for doing so. In Puerto Rico, it is technically not legal to use your hazard lights when you are driving for any reason. It is legal only when you are stopped or pulled over.

How mileage affects your vehicle

Mileage affects your car in two related ways: it accounts for wear and tear on the car and its parts, and it is an indicator that helps determine the value of a car. The more miles a car has on it, the more wear and tear there will be which in turn leads to a steady depreciation of value. You should use your car as you need to and as you see fit but you should also always be careful to not rack up too many miles on it too quickly.

If you do put a lot of miles on your car quickly, it will end up costing you more in maintenance fees. Now, if you do take care of your car and keep up on maintenance, you will be increasing the re-sale value, but you will never be able to fully recoup the value of putting too many miles on it. That is why you should do everything in your power to limit the amount of mileage you put on your car in Puerto Rico or anywhere else.

How to limit the mileage on your car

Obviously, the sum total of limiting the mileage you put on your car is by driving it less but having success in doing so is more complex than that. You will need to do specific things to keep the mileage that you put on your car low. One such thing usually is not taking super long road trips. However, because of the small size of Puerto Rico, you will not be able to rack up thousands of miles in one trip. Technically you could possibly do so in Puerto Rico, but you would have to drive the length of the island several times just to break one thousand.

Putting less mileage on your car will come down to using the car less. You can do this easily in areas like San Juan by choose to walk or bike somewhere. You can also choose to use public transportation. You can also choose to carpool to work with friends and/or coworkers. Finally, you can choose to use cabs or ride-share services occasionally.

Conclusion

The mileage that goes on your car simultaneously increases wear and tear as well as decrease the vehicle’s value. That is why you should do your best to limit the number of total miles you put on your car. You should not get crazy and try to avoid driving altogether but you should try things like carpooling to work or, if the trip is close enough, biking or walking instead.

How tire traction will keep your drive smooth and safe

Tire traction is as important in Puerto Rico as it is anywhere else. It will allow you to be able maneuver your car safely. Without proper traction, you are at a much higher risk of getting into an accident. When you consider the haphazard driving of many motorists in Puerto Rico, you can see how an added advantage like good traction will be important.

Traction allows your tires to grip the road better. So, you will be able to make turns and manipulate the steering with more precision so long as you have tires with better traction.

The effects of Puerto Rico’s weather on traction

Puerto Rico has a considerable amount of rain. It also has some great locations that you can go off roading. However, you are going to need tires that have a good amount of traction that you can trust in order to be able to drive in those conditions safely.

The rain in Puerto Rico depends on where you are. In many areas it is at least 1500 millimeters per year. That is higher than most places in the United States. However, in other areas in Puerto Rico the rain can reach levels of 4000 millimeters per year.

Rain decreases traction by reducing friction between your tires and the street. This is why driving in the rain can lead to your car sliding when you try and stop. If you have tires with better treads, your car will be able to mitigate some of these negative and dangerous effects.

Advice for maintaining proper tire traction in Puerto Rico

In order to maximize and increase traction, make use of the following advice:

The right tires are everything – Some tires traction are intended for driving in the snow while others are better suited to driving in the rain. Be sure that you do your research and get the correct tires for your particular traction needs.

Deeper treads are better for offroading – The fact of the matter is that the deeper and better treads you have on your tires the more traction you will have. When you are offroading, you will need all the grip on the road that you could possibly get.

Avoid wear and tear with rotation – Your front and rear tires do not wear evenly. You should get them rotated at least once each year in order to ensure that they do wear evenly.

Final word

Your tire’s traction is likely much more important than you think in Puerto Rico. Good traction will allow you to handle your car with maximum precision in conditions such as rain and when you are off-roading. Most of all, traction is important in terms of remaining safe while you drive.

What you need to have to register your car in Puerto Rico

Registering your car in Puerto Rico is not fun but is something that you will absolutely need to do. If you get pulled over in Puerto Rico and your car is not registered, the penalty will be at least a hundred dollars and you could get points on your license which will lead to an increase of insurance rates.

When you are registering your vehicle in Puerto Rico, you do not need to know how to speak Spanish, but it will help make the process a bit smoother if you know at least a little bit of Spanish. Most of the people you will end up dealing with will know at least a little bit of English.

The physical things that you will need are a unexpired and clean Puerto Rico driver’s license, a clean title on the car and the excise tax papers proving you are all paid-up with the port.

If you are not a Puerto Rico resident the process will be a bit more difficult. You will need your unexpired US driver’s license, a clean title on the car, the import papers, the tax papers, your passport, your social security card and some sort of paperwork that proves you own property in Puerto Rico or that you are renting.

If you are not a resident, the process will take longer and will be more difficult. We recommend that you work on becoming a resident before you do anything else.

The process of registering your car in Puerto Rico

The process is a long one, but it is something that you need to do to be able to drive legally in Puerto Rico. The first thing that you will need to do is to stop at a DTOP office. This will likely be a long wait, so be sure you have a couple of hours to spare.

There, you will get a form filled out called “Expedicion Comprobantes de Pago”, this is quite important. It serves as a request for an emissions test (which you will have to get) as well as a bill for you to pay to the Hacienda office. You will need to start the process all over and do that long wait again if you lose it and need another copy.

After that, you should take that form to a garage in Puerto Rico and get an emissions test. This will cost somewhere from about $20 to $50 dollars depending on where you go. This will only take a few minutes, then (assuming your car passed the emissions test) you will get a certificate stating that it passed.

At this point, you will need to visit a Hacienda office in order to pay your fees. The lines here might be extremely long, so be prepared to wait once again. You can always try finding a Hacienda office in a more remote area of Puerto Rico as they normally have shorter lines there. Be sure you bring cash with you because some of these offices might not be accepting credit cards.

They will give you a receipt. Take this receipt back to the DTOP office. They will check that to make sure you paid and then they will inspect your car (again) to make sure that the information you provided is accurate and that the car you are trying to register is not actually stolen. You will then get a filled-out form called “Informe de Investigation”, bring this form back into the office afterwards and you will finish up the registration process there.

Once you get your window sticker for your registration, place it on the inside of your windshield as soon as you can.

Important facts about registering your car in Puerto Rico

Keep these facts in mind when you are going to register your car in Puerto Rico:

It is easy to get a ticket for expired registration – One of the most commonly given out tickets is for expired registration. This is because it gets instantly checked any time that you get pulled over. The stickers are even readable if you are parked or sitting at a light, so make you get your car registered every year as soon as you get the chance.

Do not lose any of the documentation you receive – As we mentioned above, do not lose any of the official documentation that you get from the DTOP office or Hacienda office. If you do, you will need to go back and wait all over again.

You need to become a citizen or at least get a place before you can register your car – You must be able to prove residency in Puerto Rico in order for you to officially register your car. So, you will either need a Puerto Rico driver’s license or you will need documentation proving that you own a home or are renting an apartment.

Get ready to wait – The lines at the DTOP and Hacienda offices are almost always very long. Bring a book or something to keep yourself occupied because the wait is usually over an hour long.

There is almost no way that you will be able to complete the registration process in only one day – Between the wait and the fact that you have no choice but to travel between offices several times it is all but impossible to finish up the process in just one day. Also keep in mind that offices might be randomly closed or short-staffed which will obviously add to your wait time.

Conclusion

Registering your car in Puerto Rico is a complicated process, especially if you are not yet an official citizen.
Basic information about shipping your car to Puerto Rico from the United States

Shipping a car to Puerto Rico from the United States is easier than it might initially seem. The vast majority of the process will be handled by your car shipping company. However, there are a couple of things you will need to do before you ship your car to Puerto Rico in order to make sure that your shipment goes as smoothly as possible.

Before we jump into the details of what you need to do in order to ship your car to Puerto Rico, lets go over some basic information about shipping your car there.

The top question we always get is “How much will it cost to ship my car to Puerto Rico?” The answer is that it depends on several things such as when you are shipping your car, what kind of car it is and where in the US you are shipping it from.

Let’s say that you were shipping a 2012 Nissan Sentra to Puerto Rico from Orlando, Florida in the middle of September 2019, which is about a month from when this post is being published. It would cost about $1,500.

People also tend to wonder how long it will take for their car to get to Puerto Rico when they ship it. In the case that we mentioned above, it would usually take between five days and a week.

Now remember, when you get quoted a price as we did to get the above price, those prices are estimates which could change moderately based on a few things such as carrier availability. The transit time is also an estimate which is subject to change based on factors like weather.

Unfortunately, cars that have badly cracked windshields or cars that are not running can not be shipped by Puerto Rico Car Transport at this time. You can call us with any questions at (904) 322-7644.

The requirements to ship your car from the United States to Puerto Rico

There are some requirements for you if you want to ship your car from United States to Puerto Rico. They are:

The car must be clean – Whether you are dropping it off at the port or getting your car picked up, it must be clean when you hand it over so that a thorough inspection can be conducted.

Valid photo identification, registration and title – You will need to have valid photo ID as well as the registration and title for the vehicle when you drop off the car or have it picked up.

Take all of your stuff out of the car – You cannot ship any personal items in the vehicle. You can only leave things that are normally attached to the vehicle as well as car seats.

Gas – When your car is either picked up by your driver or dropped off by you, you cannot have more than a quarter tank of gas in the car. However, there must be enough gas for the carrier to drive the car on and off the truck/ship. So, aim to have as close to a quarter tank of gas as possible. There is not a siphoning service available, so do not forget this.

These requirements are different than shipping your car to the United States from Puerto Rico

These requirements are not the same as if you were shipping your car FROM Puerto Rico TO the US. For instance, you would need several Puerto Rican government issued documents in order to ship from Puerto Rico. When you are shipping to Puerto Rico, you do not need these.

For the list of requirements to ship your car from Puerto Rico to the United States, you can click here.

Conclusion

It is a good idea to plan in advanced and to get these things done ahead of time. You do not want to end up rushing around completing these things the day before you are dropping your car off or having it picked up. Otherwise, those few simple tasks are all that you need to worry about yourself during your car shipment.

Remember, if you have any questions or concerns, you can call Puerto Rico Car Transport at (904) 322-7644.

Auto transport basics

Shipping your car somewhere takes the difficulty of getting your car from point A to point B. In many cases, you will have the decision to ship your car or drive it yourself. Unfortunately, when you are talking about getting your car from Puerto Rico to the United States, that is not the case as you need to have your car shipped in this direction.

However, you won’t need to worry though because vehicle shipping is an easy enough process.

The process generally goes as follows when shipping from Puerto Rico to the United States:

You book your shipment online or by phone

You prepare for your shipment by getting the necessary documents ready, removing personal items from your car, making sure there is not more than a quarter tank of gas in the vehicle and getting your car cleaned.

Your car is dropped off at the port and loaded on the ship.

Your car ships and arrives at the port where it is either picked up by you or loaded onto an auto carrier truck where it will be shipped to your delivery address.

Depending on your specific shipment details, your shipment will take several days up to several weeks. Your specific transit time estimation will be provided to you when you get a quote or speak to a representative over the phone.

Shipping your car from Puerto Rico to the United States

The overall process for shipping your car from Puerto Rico to the United States is pretty straight forward. You also won’t need to worry about any “excise tax” when you are shipping in this direction.

You will book your shipment, get your documents ready, take your car to the port and then the rest is on your car shipping company. Your car can be delivered either to your home or business in the United States or to the Jacksonville, Florida port or Pennsauken, New Jersey port. If you choose to only have the car delivered to the port, you will need to go pick it up. So, we do recommend having it delivered to your door, although the choice is yours.

Generally, any vehicle shipment to the United States will take between a week and two and a half weeks, approximately. This is primarily dependent on where you are shipping your car to.

For example, shipping your car to Florida from Puerto Rico will take about 6 to 8 days, depending on the exact delivery location as well as things like carrier availability. However, if you were shipping your car to Vermont it would take approximately 14 to 18 days for your vehicle to arrive. Keep in mind all shipping dates are just approximations and it could take an extra couple of days for your car to arrive. You can get a free quote here with a more specific approximation of transit time here.

While your car is shipping to the US, it will be secured safely inside the hull of ship to make sure it has the maximum amount of protection from the elements outside of the ship. If you chose to have it delivered to your door, it will be placed on an auto carrier truck once it arrives at the American port and will then be driven the rest of the way.

Tips for shipping your car from Puerto Rico to the United States

Here are a few tips for shipping your car from Puerto Rico to the United States so that the shipping process will be as smooth as possible:

Have all your documents ready when you drop your car off at the port – When you are dropping your car off at the San Juan port, you will need your documentation. So, be sure that you take the following with you to the port:

License

Booking confirmation

Vehicle title

Proof of ownership

Be sure your car is empty before you drop it off – Unfortunately, you aren’t allowed to ship anything in your vehicle when you are shipping from Puerto Rico to the US. So, be sure your car is empty. Things like CDs or a GPS might not break the rules, but they won’t be covered by the shipping insurance if they are damaged or lost so be sure to remove those sorts of things as well.

Make sure the car is clean prior to dropping it off – When you drop your car off at the San Juan port, it will need to be inspected for pre-existing damage. It makes it much more difficult and takes more time to do this if the car isn’t clean.

Prepare to be without your car for the appropriate amount of time – As mentioned earlier, your car shipment could take between 6 and 18 days. Be sure that you make arrangements that allow you to get around for that time without your vehicle.

Be sure you will be there for your delivery – You will need to make sure that you are at your delivery location, wherever it is in the US, when your car arrives for drop-off. If you are not, you could end up without your car for an extended period of time.

Conclusion

Shipping your car from Puerto Rico to the United States is the only way to get it there. Thankfully, you won’t need to worry much at all because the car shipping process is made easy by people like the experts at Puerto Rico Car transport. You will need some minimal involvement and preparation but that is a small price to pay for getting your car where it needs to be.
