Should Puerto Rico become a State?

Puerto Rico State

Whether or not Puerto Rico should become a state is a question that tends to spark debate. While no particular view or opinion is right or wrong, there are some reasons that are viable, some that are intriguing and some that are very interesting. It’s all just a matter of opinion.

Here then is a collection of thoughts on the advantages and disadvantages, as to whether or not Puerto Rico should become a state.

The Advantages of Puerto Rico becoming a State

Tourism – With a tropical rainforest, white sand beaches, and lots of history and culture from their food to their drinks, Puerto Rico is and probably will always be a hot tourist spot. If Puerto Rico becomes a state, the United States could incur the advantage of increased tax revenues from all of that tourism.

Increased availability of governmental programs – If Puerto Rico becomes a state, low income families and individuals could benefit from government programs.

Status – Puerto Rico could potentially feel as though statehood has boosted their status by becoming a state.

Voters – More voters, more voices. Becoming a state, paying taxes and the ability to vote.

Downsides of Puerto Rico becoming a State

Loss of Incentives for Businesses – Businesses reap many rewards by doing business in the Commonwealth status of Puerto Rico. Many businesses would lose these tax incentives and subsidies to promote their businesses there, as it is dependent upon that Commonwealth status.

Implementation of Federal Income Tax –The implementing of federal income tax may put a strain on the middle class.

Political Reorganization – Would Puerto Ricans be able to successfully identify with one of the 2 major U.S. political parties? Would they be fairly represented?

Side Notes

While these may be valid advantages and disadvantages, there are other items that come up for discussion in the debate.

What about the Star? – For example, one of the more interesting questions is…Where would the star go? For some reason, this one seems to be a topic of genuine interest – where would the star go on the United States flag if Puerto Rico became a state? Interesting and intriguing question indeed. How would the flag change?

Puerto Rico Would Lose Its Culture – For some, the fear that Puerto Rico would lose its culture -from its language to its traditions is a real fear. Do you see that as happening if Puerto Rico were to become a state or could tradition and culture stay alive and vibrant?

While these are collective thoughts – with some individuals all for Puerto Rico becoming a state while others are completely opposed – it will be interesting to follow the continuing debate for both sides.
