Relocating to Puerto Rico and taking your car with you? Well soon, you’ll be driving in Puerto Rico and the roads can be a bit different from where you’re coming from. Driving in Puerto Rico can be a unique experience and you will be witnessing things you’ve maybe never seen before. Although you drive on the right side of the road and the same basic driving rules are enforced, there are some differences you can expect to see. Below are some crazy things you can expect to see while driving in Puerto Rico.

City centers are known for a crazy amount of traffic, especially during rush hour, holidays, and weekends.

Slow drivers keep to the left and oftentimes speed limits are just on the side of the road for show. Many people can be seen going well over the speed limit, while others are seen in the left lane going well under the speed limit.

Motorcyclists are usually weaving in and out of cars. They ride at very high speeds and are often wearing no more than a t-shirt.

Red lights and stop signs aren’t strictly enforced. Many people do not stop at stop signs, especially during early morning hours. Yellow usually means slow down; however, in Puerto Rico, to some, yellow means go faster.

Depending where you are from, you may have to be cautious of deer, geese, raccoons, and/or turkeys crossing the road. In Puerto Rico you need to be on the lookout for iguanas. Iguanas are everywhere. They don’t care if you are driving, they are still going to cross the road. Since they are slow moving, they are unfortunately killed by drivers.

In some areas speed bumps can be found almost every couple of feet. Some speed bumps are painted so you are giving a warning that one is approaching. However, others are not, so it can make for a very bumpy ride.

Buying real estate in Puerto Rico can be an exciting experience, but also nerve wracking, especially if you aren’t familiar with the state and towns. Choosing the perfect place to settle down in can be overwhelming, so where do you start when buying real estate in Puerto Rico? Do you want a real estate agent from your location that can do research on areas in Puerto Rico? Or do you want to deal with a real estate agent in your new area? Do you think seeing homes virtually is enough to make a decision? Or should you plan to spend a week or two in Puerto Rico in order to attend open houses?

Below are some tips for before and after you find your perfect real estate property in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico is filled beautiful Caribbean beaches, breathtaking natural wonders, and ocean climates that make you want to swim all year round. There are many different types of properties in Puerto Rico, so you first have to see what is the best for you. Will you go with a waterfront property, condo, private villa, or a house? You should also research the area, home price data, and any background information.

When finding a place you would like to purchase, you should get a lawyer. Although having a lawyer when buying real estate in Puerto Rico is not mandatory, it is highly recommended. A lawyer will handle any major financial transactions and could be an asset if questions were to arise or if there were any financial hiccups that arise along the way. In addition to hiring a lawyer, you should hire a licensed inspector. Many homes in Puerto Rico are sold “as-is” so it is important to have an inspector see if there are any negatives to the property. If there are, your lawyer would come in handy in negotiating on coming down in price.

Traveling and relocating to another country is such a memorable time. It is full of exciting new adventures and experiences. However, if you can’t speak the language or understand the slang, then you may become frustrated and feel lost. If you already speak Spanish, then you are off to a great start. In order to experience the culture, navigate your way around, and leisurely explore restaurants, shopping, and history, you’ll need to at least speak Spanish a little bit. If you have no clue on where to start with learning the language, below are some common used words, phrases, and slang used in Puerto Rico.

A fuego- Translates to “on fire”. However, this term is also widely used by many to show their feelings that something is really pleasing or attractive.

Chacho- The real word is munchaco, which means boy or young man. Chacho means “Oh, boy!” which is the phrase used when something happens that is either by surprise or unexpected.

Mira- Translates to “look” but it also means “hey” as in you want to get someone’s attention.

Wepa!- A happy and positive phrase! Wepa means “Yay!” “Great job” or “Congrats!”

Nitido- If you like something, then it is nitido, which translates to “cool.”

Chavos- The slang term for cash.

Guagua- The slang terms for the public transportation buses that run through San Juan, Old San Juan, and the surrounding communities. Many Puerto Ricans utilize this public transportation system because it covers lots of grounds in the surrounding areas. However, the buses are usually late.

Estoy perdido- I’m lost

De ida y vuelta- roundtrip

Como se dice?- How do you say?

Estoy buscando solamente, gracias!- I am only looking, thank you!

Pa’lla (contraction of para alla)- Over there

Pa’ca (contraction on para aca)- Over here

Iguaca- A rare endangered parrot found in El Yunque, the Puerto Rican Amazon. It is a symbol of the island and the government is working hard to try and save them from endangerment.

Borinquen- Puerto Rican

Since Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, it takes part in all United States public holidays, which includes Independence Day. Fourth of July in Puerto Rico is celebrated much like it is in the United States. The island celebrates with live music, fireworks, and of course, a spin on the food with the incorporation of Puerto Rican food. Like the United States, many people celebrate Fourth of July in Puerto Rico by spending time with their family at festivals, the beach, or BBQs.

Old San Juan, specifically, the Plaza del Quinto Centenario, is a place to visit when celebrating Fourth of July in Puerto Rico. The plaza is known for its music, food, and fireworks. Staying in San Juan, you could also visit the Condado Lagoon for their Fourth of July celebrations. The Puerto Rico Tourism Company hosts a day long festival packed with live music and food stands. Food and drinks are from various vendors such as Craft Beer Expo, Urban Market, and Farmers Market. After a day of eating and drinking, there is a fireworks display that is synchronized with the Arturo Somohano Symphony Orchestra. About 45 minutes east of San Juan, the Wyndham Rio Mar Resort is home to a large Fourth of July festival. The festival runs all day long with food stations, salsa dancing, bouncy castles for kids, bull riding, and watermelon eating competitions. The day ends with a fireworks display. The actual day long event is free, but car parking is $10.

Although not an official Fourth of July celebration, The Annual Cattleman’s BBQ Competition takes place in July. At this annual competition, you can expect to see over 80 teams, 35 sponsors, and 15,000 hungry competitors. The competitors eat anything from steak, brisket, pulled pork, wings, hamburgers, and seafood.

The best time to visit and/or relocate to Puerto Rico is in June. Beaches are now beginning to fill up, tourist spots are becoming more crowded, and hurricane season is just beginning so it isn’t in full swing just yet. June is considered one of the hottest months in Puerto Rico, but it is also the the busiest as far as events and festivals go. There are many Puerto Rico festivals occurring in June.

If you decide to visit Puerto Rico in June, you will have the opportunity to experience the SoFo Culinary Week which is when Calle Fortaleza (South Fortaleza Street) in Old San Juan becomes an outdoor street fair with tasting booths. More than five blocks are closed down for food vendors, music, and entertainment. There are at least 30 participating restaurants and a variety of cuisines. Some restaurants set up in the street, while others create makeshift bars so you can easily get a cocktail of your choice. If you enjoy food, be sure to visit Puerto Rico around this festival.

At the end of June you can’t miss Carnival in Rio Grande. Rio Grande is the “city of El Yunque” and each year they have a four day festival to celebrate Carnaval Ciudad de El Yunque. This festival is jammed packed with food, music, parades, carnival rides, and fireworks. It is one of the Puerto Rico festivals you do not want to miss. The first few days are opening ceremonies where you can expect to see live music and shows, and amusement rides. By the end of the week, you can attend the 10k race and parade. If you can only attend one day of this four day Puerto Rican festival, be sure to attend on Sunday, the last day. Sunday is considered the day of Carnival, where you can watch a variety of parades, see loud costumes, and hear cultured music. If you can’t attend this Puerto Rican festival at the end of June/ early July, try experiencing the “set up” for the event. By mid- June the town begins to set up colorful decorations, amusement rides, and floats.

June is a busy month for Puerto Rico Festivals. Contact us today to ensure your is car shipped there on time so you can experience one of the many festivals Puerto Rico has to offer in June!

Puerto Rico, located in the Caribbean, is known for its crystal blue beaches, breathtaking landscape, mountains, waterfalls, and historical filled structures. There are so many “Puerto Rico Must Dos” that it could be overwhelming making an itinerary and knowing what to do.

First on the list for Puerto Rico Must Dos is Castillo San Felipe de Morro and Castillo de San Cristobal. These two castles were built by Spanish engineers and were meant to guard the city from enemies in the sea. Castillo San Felipe del Morro, or El Morro for short, is a six level fort on top of high land. When you visit, you will be mesmerized by its 27 acres of land, 60 foot tall walls and old cannons. Since it is located on high land, the views of the sea and surrounding areas of Puerto Rico are breathtaking.

Next up on the for Puerto Rico Must Dos is the El Yunque National Rainforest. Puerto Rico is considered United States Territory. With that, the El Yunque National Rainforest is one of the few rainforests located in the United States. The rainforest stretches for over 28,000 acres of land and is considered a very popular spot due to its hiking, waterfalls, and foliage. You can expect to see a vast variety of birds, bats, lizards, and frogs. Although snakes are rare, there is a Puerto Rican Boa. If you decide to visit, you can even book a stay at one of the lodging opportunities located at the edge of the rainforest.

Last on the list for Puerto Rico Must Dos is to take a day trip to Culebrita Island. Culebrita Island is only one kilometer long and is uninhabited. However, by boat, you can plan a day visit to one of the six beaches. It is famous for its turtles. While swimming in the waters, people have been known to swim next to a variety of turtle species. The island has a west side and east side. On the east side there are large tidal pools that you can take advantage of swimming in. The west side is known for snorkeling and scuba diving.

So, let us worry about shipping your car to Puerto Rico, while you worry about which activity on the Puerto Rico Must Dos list you want to check off first!

Islands across the Caribbean have been distraught since the devastation of the last hurricane occurred. Hurricane Irma was the worst natural disaster to hit Puerto Rico in the last century. It’s been almost a month since the hurricane hit the island. As global citizens we must unite in helping Puerto Rico. The island has virtually no running water or electricity, here’s how you can help with hurricane relief in Puerto Rico.

Many organizations are asking for cash as opposed to supplies so they can send support where its most needed. We’ve listed all hurricane relief organizations below if you wish to donate and aid the island in need.

United for Puerto Rico

UNICEF

Center for Popular Democracy

American Red Cross

Salvation Army

Hispanic Federation’s “Unidos” page

International Medical Corps

Americares

Catholic Relief Services

Americares

Direct Relief

Save the Children – (Priority relief for families with children)

GoFundMe -includes various campaigns for Hurricane Maria.

The National Voluntary Organizations (VOAD) is accepting supplies and volunteers.

Most of the Caribbean is without power, we must unite, spread the word of their troubles and assist in any way we can. We hope everyone is keeping positive and receiving all the help they can during these tough times.

Need to Ship A Boat To Puerto Rico?

Here at Puerto Rico Car Transport we specialize in shipping many other types of cargo to Puerto Rico aside from passenger automobiles. We now offer boat shipping to and from Puerto Rico. This has become very common due to the high costs of boats in Puerto Rico.

We recommend to ship a boat to Puerto Rico, as it is more economical then buying one on the island. It is also just as easy and hassle free as shipping a car. We suggest you book your shipment about a month prior so we can work within your time frame needs.(You can book directly online or give us a call). We would need to reserve the space on the ship in advance. For your convenience we can also offer you door-port delivery service. We’ll save you the hassle of towing your boat to the port. We can pick your boat up directly from your doorstep. This is also convenient if you are not located near one of our ports. Transit times do vary depending on your location, but a normal shipping time frame would be around 7-9 days.

Harmony of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship has added Puerto Rico to one of its destinations. The Royal Caribbean vessel completed its first voyage to Puerto Rico from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Fifteen more sailings to Puerto Rico are planned through the end of the year.

Harmony spent its first seasons in Europe last year. Then began sailing out of Fort Lauderdale in November heading to included Cozumel, Mexico; Falmouth, Jamaica; and Labadee, Haiti. The new Puerto Rico sailings are seven-night trips that also include stops in Labadee, Haiti and either Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas or Philipsburg, St. Maarten.

Harmony is similar to Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, these were named the largest in the cruise world. Some of the ships features include three water slides, two rock climbing walls, two surf simulators, ice skating rink, zipline and The Ultimate Abyss, a 10-story dry slide that plummets passengers down a ride through twists and turns. Those who prefer more leisurely activities won’t be disappointed, either. The ship has three big pools and lounging areas, an adults-only Solarium space, a relaxing spa and live music.

The 2015 Puerto Rican Investment Summit was a meeting of the minds where the Puerto Rican government welcomed investors and entrepreneurs alike to discuss the potential for new business in Puerto Rico. Information was provided on the many benefits of doing business in Puerto Rico from tax incentives to having dual official languages. Puerto Rico can serve as the portal for entrepreneurs to take their businesses to new heights.

When it comes to the three most important criteria known as “location, location, location,” Puerto Rico has that too. Combine that with being a territory of the United States with a tax system based on foreign tax structures, and you’ve got enough reasons to create a business there.

You don’t have to be an international business or major corporation to consider creating a business in Puerto Rico. While pharmaceutical companies and travel and leisure organizations are some of the more popular industries, you can create a small business in Puerto Rico, as well. With a mindset of opportunity that comes from being a part of the United States and tax incentives based on a foreign tax structure, your business has a good chance to thrive.

Tourism and Hospitality

There are several options to choose from when it comes to tourism and hospitality. Puerto Rico is a much-loved territory for vacationers and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down in that department.

Maybe you were working as a travel agent and want to continue that path in a place that resembles paradise. You could consider becoming a consultant in the tourism industry. With huge tax incentives on income tax and property tax, you get to help visitors enjoy their time in Puerto Rico as you enjoy large tax breaks.

There have been stories about individuals who left high-paying jobs to become tour guides, travel agents or travel writers. You never know, you may just find your niche in Puerto Rico and go on to own and operate your own travel agency or become a consultant.

Real Estate Agent

If there has ever been a time to buy or sell property in Puerto Rico, the time is now. With Puerto Rico searching for ways to recover from a struggling economy, real estate may be coming down a bit in price.

Becoming a real estate agent or even investor at this time may be a wise choice indeed. If you are not already licensed, then, of course, you would have to attend classes and obtain the licensure necessary. Once you have a few years of experience under your belt, if you don’t already, the possibilities are endless. You could eventually find yourself in the middle of paradise operating your own real estate business, tax incentives and all.

Marketing

The world of marketing and advertising has changed tremendously over the last several years. With the popularity of Search Engine Optimization, Search Engine Marketing, and Content Marketing, you could run a business remotely in Puerto Rico, gain all the tax incentives and enjoy a little slice of heaven as you work from your laptop beachside.

You could begin by taking marketing classes, choose a niche such as travel and tourism or health care. Health care is a popular industry in Puerto Rico. Whether you’re target audience is located in Puerto Rico or not, does not matter. You can conduct business remotely for the most part and, as long as you continue to keep the business relationship alive, your marketing business has the potential to thrive.

Freelance

The most emerging trend is bucking the 9-to-5 system in the workplace and creating a business that you love as well as a life that you love. Working from home, telecommuting and working from any location you desire has become the new wave.

As a freelance writer, marketer or even graphic designer, the possibilities are endless. Just imagine creating a logo as a graphic designer and getting your inspiration from the ocean in front of you or writing an article poolside.

While you may have to hand over a hefty amount of your profits in the United States whether you freelance or not, Puerto Rico offers greater tax incentives.

Rental Properties

If income tax and property tax remain at a minimum, imagine the profits you could earn as a return on your investment in Puerto Rico. It’s like a double reward; minimum property tax plus a rental income. That means more profit from your rental property business and more money in your pocket. With sites such as Airbnb and HomeAway, you could be showing significant profits in no time.

The fact that Puerto Rico is looking to reinvent itself and emerge victorious from its economic struggle combined with its enticing tax incentives, may just be enough of an incentive for you to start thinking about what type of business you would want to start there, and soon.
