Shipping your vehicle to Puerto Rico offers significant convenience for residents, military personnel, and businesses alike. While Puerto Rico shares many similarities with the mainland as a U.S. territory, transporting vehicles to the island comes with distinct considerations—particularly regarding taxes and fees that can substantially impact your overall costs.

One of the most significant challenges vehicle owners face when shipping to Puerto Rico is the excise tax (arbitrios) imposed on imported vehicles. This tax is separate from your shipping costs and must be paid directly to Puerto Rican authorities upon your vehicle’s arrival. Being unprepared for this substantial expense can lead to delays, storage fees, and unnecessary stress during your relocation process.

Beyond taxes, vehicle owners must also manage documentation requirements, proper vehicle preparation for overseas transport, and the selection of appropriate shipping methods. These factors affect not only your costs but also the timeline and success of your vehicle transport. This guide covers everything you need to know about shipping your vehicle to Puerto Rico, with a special focus on tax considerations that will help you avoid unexpected complications or expenses.

An Overview of the Vehicle Shipping Options to Puerto Rico

When transporting your vehicle to Puerto Rico, you have several shipping options to consider. Each comes with different costs, convenience levels, and logistical considerations. Understanding these options will help you make the most informed decision for your specific situation.

Door-to-Port vs. Port-to-Port Shipping

When shipping your vehicle to Puerto Rico, you have two primary service options to choose from based on your needs and preferences:

Door-to-Port Service: Your vehicle is picked up directly from your residence or business anywhere in the mainland U.S. and transported to the departure port. From there, it’s loaded onto a vessel bound for San Juan, where you or your representative will need to collect it upon arrival.

Port-to-Port Service: You deliver your vehicle directly to the departure port (typically Jacksonville, FL or Pennsauken, NJ), where it’s then transported to the port in San Juan. This option is generally more economical but requires you to handle transportation to the mainland port yourself.

For most customers, door-to-port service offers the most convenience and eliminates the hassle of driving your vehicle to a departure port, which may be hundreds of miles from your location.

RoRo Shipping Explained

Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) shipping is the standard service for Puerto Rico vehicle transport. This method involves:

Vehicles being driven directly onto the vessel

Secure fastening to prevent movement during transport

Protection from outdoor elements that would typically affect vehicles on open-air barges

A cost-effective solution for standard vehicles

RoRo is considered the most secure and affordable way to ship vehicles to and from Puerto Rico. Vehicles are safely loaded into the actual ship or barge and protected throughout the journey, making it an excellent option for most car shipping needs.

Timeframes and Shipping Logistics

Transit times vary depending on your origin location, but generally:

From Florida ports: 7-10 days

From New Jersey ports: 10-14 days

For door-to-port service from other locations, add 3-7 days for mainland transit

Once your vehicle arrives in San Juan, it typically takes 2-3 business days for processing before it’s available for pickup.

Documentation Requirements

Proper documentation is essential for smooth vehicle transport to Puerto Rico. You’ll need:

Vehicle title or lien holder authorization

Government-issued ID (driver’s license or passport)

Booking number

Vehicle registration (current or within 30 days of expiration)

Notarized authorization letter (if someone else is shipping on your behalf)

Having these documents organized and readily available will help prevent delays in your vehicle’s transport process.

Puerto Rico’s Excise Tax System Explained

When shipping a vehicle to Puerto Rico, the excise tax represents one of the most significant financial considerations beyond the standard car shipping costs. This tax system plays a major role in the island’s economy while directly impacting vehicle importers.

Unlike fees paid to an auto transport company, this government-mandated tax goes directly to the Puerto Rican authorities and serves specific purposes for the island. Let’s examine how this tax works, current rates, and why it exists.

What is Excise Tax and How It Works

The Puerto Rico excise tax, known locally as “arbitrios,” is a tax imposed on vehicles imported to the island. This tax is not paid to your shipping provider but directly to the Puerto Rican government. This tax system functions as an important revenue source for the island.

The excise tax applies to virtually all vehicles entering Puerto Rico, regardless of whether they’re new, used, or previously owned by the importer. Even if you’re bringing your own vehicle for personal use rather than commercial purposes, you’ll still be subject to this tax.

Current Tax Rates

The excise tax rate in Puerto Rico is currently set at approximately 4% of the vehicle’s determined value in Puerto Rico. However, this percentage can vary based on several factors, including:

The vehicle’s make, model, and year

The condition of the vehicle

Current market value in Puerto Rico

It’s important to note that the vehicle’s value is not necessarily what you paid for it but rather what it’s deemed to be worth in Puerto Rico’s market. This valuation system can sometimes result in surprisingly high tax amounts for certain vehicles.

Why Puerto Rico Implements Excise Tax

Puerto Rico has implemented excise taxes for several key reasons:

Revenue Generation: Unlike the mainland U.S., most Puerto Rican residents do not pay federal income tax. This creates a need for alternative revenue sources.

Economic Recovery: The island continues to recover from Hurricane Maria and has experienced economic challenges for over a decade.

Infrastructure Funding: Tax revenue helps maintain ports, roads, and other infrastructure necessary for vehicle imports and transportation.

The excise tax is not designed to discourage vehicle imports (as excise taxes often do for items like tobacco or alcohol in other regions), but rather serves as a necessary funding mechanism for the Puerto Rican government.

How Excise Tax Differs from Mainland Taxes

The Puerto Rico excise tax differs from mainland vehicle taxes in several important ways:

It’s a one-time payment rather than an annual tax

It’s based on the vehicle’s value in Puerto Rico’s market, not its original purchase price

It’s collected at the point of entry (the port) before the vehicle can be released

The tax is not included in your shipping costs and must be paid separately

These differences are essential to recognize for mainland residents shipping vehicles to Puerto Rico, as the tax structure may differ significantly from what you’re accustomed to in your state.

Calculating Your Excise Tax Liability

Estimating your excise tax liability before shipping your vehicle to Puerto Rico can help avoid financial surprises. The process is straightforward but requires specific information about your vehicle.

To determine your excise tax amount:

Visit the official Puerto Rico Treasury Department (Hacienda) SURI website

Enter your vehicle’s VIN number, or the make, model, and year

Look for “Estimated Arbitration” or “Arbitrio Estimado” in the results

Translate the page to English if needed by right-clicking and selecting “Translate to English”

Add this amount to your overall vehicle shipping budget

Several factors influence your final tax amount, including vehicle age, luxury status, and current market demand in Puerto Rico. Newer and premium vehicles typically incur higher taxes based on their assessed value in the Puerto Rican market.

Common mistakes to avoid include underestimating the tax amount, failing to budget for this separate expense, and not having the proper payment method ready when your vehicle arrives. Remember that this tax is separate from your shipping costs and must be paid before your vehicle can be released from the port.

Tax Payment Process and Requirements

Paying your excise tax correctly is essential for retrieving your vehicle promptly after it arrives in Puerto Rico. The process requires visiting the Hacienda Centro de Servicios located at 2 Avenida Juan Ponce de León in San Juan.

When paying your excise tax, remember these key points:

Payment must be made in person at the designated location

Bring your government-issued photo ID, vehicle title, and shipping documentation

Complete the Official Excise Tax Document available at the payment center

Cash is the most reliable payment method (U.S. dollars)

Credit cards may be accepted, but their systems are sometimes unavailable

Personal checks are not accepted

Timing is important—your vehicle cannot be released until the tax is paid, and delays can result in additional port storage charges. Plan to complete this process immediately after your vehicle arrives to avoid unnecessary fees and complications. The entire process typically takes several hours, so arrive during business hours with sufficient time to complete all paperwork and payment steps.

Vehicle Preparation Requirements

Proper vehicle preparation is essential before working with shipping companies to transport your vehicle to Puerto Rico. Following these requirements ensures compliance with regulations and prevents costly delays in the shipping process.

Personal Item Restrictions

Your vehicle must be completely clean and empty

Exceptions are limited to child seats, jumper cables, and in some cases, automobile parts for the vehicle

All personal belongings and valuables must be removed

Random inspections may occur at the port

Fuel Requirements

Maintain less than 1/4 tank of gas (Coast Guard regulation #176.905)

No exceptions are permitted to this rule

Vehicles exceeding the fuel limit will be rejected until properly emptied

Vehicle Size Considerations

Standard shipping rates apply to vehicles not exceeding 900 cubic feet

Larger vehicles require special arrangements and may not qualify for competitive rates

Oversized vehicles need specialized handling

Required Documentation

Before your scheduled pickup or door-to-door delivery service, ensure you have:

Vehicle title or lien holder authorization

Valid government-issued ID

Current vehicle registration

Notarized authorization letter (if someone else is handling the process)

All keys to the vehicle

The Role of Customs Brokers in Vehicle Import/Export

What Is a Licensed Customs Broker?

A licensed customs broker is a private individual or company authorized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to help importers and exporters navigate international trade regulations. These professionals have undergone rigorous training and passed comprehensive examinations to demonstrate their expertise in customs laws, regulations, and procedures. When it comes to vehicle shipping, customs brokers are particularly valuable as they understand the specific requirements and challenges associated with automotive imports and exports.

Key Responsibilities in Vehicle Shipping

Customs brokers take on numerous critical responsibilities throughout the vehicle shipping process. They act as intermediaries between you, customs authorities, and shipping companies, ensuring all documentation is properly prepared and submitted. These professionals handle complex customs entries, coordinate with various government agencies, and manage the classification of vehicles according to international trade regulations. They also stay current with changing customs policies and requirements, ensuring your vehicle shipment remains compliant with the latest regulations.

Benefits of Working with a Professional Customs Broker

Partnering with a professional customs broker offers numerous advantages for international vehicle shipping. Their expertise helps prevent costly delays and potential fines that could arise from incorrect documentation or missed requirements. Customs brokers have established relationships with customs officials and understand the nuances of different ports of entry, which can expedite the clearance process. They also provide valuable guidance on duty rates, taxes, and other costs associated with importing or exporting vehicles, which will help you budget accurately for your shipment.

Essential Documentation and Compliance Services

Required Customs Forms and Declarations

The documentation requirements for international vehicle shipping can be extensive and vary depending on the origin and destination countries. Your customs broker will help you prepare and submit all necessary forms, including customs declarations, bills of lading, vehicle titles, and certificates of origin. They ensure each document is properly completed and contains all required information, preventing processing delays that could hold up your shipment at customs.

Vehicle Import Regulations and Standards

Different countries have varying requirements for imported vehicles, including safety standards, emissions regulations, and age restrictions. Even within North America, border shipping requirements can vary significantly between countries and territories. A customs broker helps you understand these requirements before shipping your vehicle, ensuring it meets all necessary standards for legal importation. They can also advise on any modifications or certifications your vehicle might need to comply with local regulations, saving you time and potential complications down the line.

Duty and Tax Calculations

Understanding the financial aspects of international vehicle shipping is critical for proper planning. Customs brokers help determine applicable duties, taxes, and other fees based on your vehicle’s value, age, and specifications. They consider factors such as country-specific import duties, value-added tax (VAT), luxury taxes, and any special fees or surcharges that may apply. While specific rates vary by country and vehicle type, your customs broker will provide you with detailed estimates to help you plan your budget effectively.

The Vehicle Shipping Process with a Customs Broker

Pre-Shipment Planning and Consultation

The journey begins with thorough planning and consultation with your customs broker. During this phase, they’ll review your vehicle’s documentation, discuss your shipping timeline, and explain the entire process in detail. They’ll also help you understand any specific requirements or restrictions for your destination country and develop a strategic plan to ensure a smooth shipping experience. This preparation phase is essential for identifying potential challenges early and addressing them proactively.

Customs Clearance Procedures

When your vehicle arrives at its port of entry, your customs broker springs into action to facilitate the clearance process. They submit all required documentation to customs authorities, coordinate necessary inspections, and respond to any queries or requests for additional information. Their expertise in customs procedures helps prevent common pitfalls that could delay clearance, ensuring your vehicle moves through the process as efficiently as possible.

Port Handling and Final Delivery

Once your vehicle clears customs, your broker continues to coordinate with port authorities and shipping agents to ensure proper handling and release. They monitor the process closely, keeping you informed of progress and addressing any issues that arise. Their involvement extends until your vehicle is successfully released from the port and ready for final delivery, ensuring a complete and professional service from start to finish.

When relocating to Puerto Rico or transporting a vehicle to the island, understanding the auto shipping process is essential for a successful experience. Shipping a car to this Caribbean destination involves unique considerations, from maritime transport requirements to customs regulations and proper vehicle preparation. This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about Puerto Rico car shipping, from basic requirements to preparation steps and cost considerations, ensuring you can make informed decisions for a smooth vehicle transport journey.

The Basics of Puerto Rico Car Shipping

Puerto Rico’s unique position as a U.S. territory means that shipping a vehicle there involves specific considerations that differ from standard continental auto transport. The process combines overland transport within the mainland United States with maritime shipping to reach the island. Your vehicle will be transported by a specialized ocean carrier equipped to handle automotive cargo safely across maritime routes.

Port-to-Port vs. Door-to-Door Auto Transport Options

When shipping your car to Puerto Rico, you have two primary service options. Port-to-port service requires you to deliver your vehicle to the departure port and pick it up from the port in San Juan. While this option can be more economical, it requires additional coordination on your part.

Door-to-door service, on the other hand, provides complete transportation from your mainland location directly to your specified destination in Puerto Rico. The auto shipping company handles all the logistics, including overland transport to the departure port and coordination with maritime shipping services.

Customs Clearance

Although Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, vehicles must still clear customs upon arrival. The process requires specific documentation, including proof of ownership (title or lienholder authorization), valid identification, and completed customs forms. Working with an experienced auto transport company can help streamline this process, as they can guide you through the documentation requirements and ensure all paperwork is properly prepared before your vehicle departs. This preparation helps prevent delays and ensures smooth customs clearance upon arrival in San Juan.

Average Transit Times for Shipping Cars to Puerto Rico

The duration of your auto transport to Puerto Rico varies based on several factors, including your departure location and chosen service level. Here’s a general timeline of what to expect:

Mainland pickup to departure port: 1-5 days depending on location

Port processing and loading: 2-3 days

Ocean transit to San Juan: 6-8 days

Customs clearance and processing: 2-3 days

Cost Factors for Puerto Rico Auto Transport

Understanding the factors that influence your shipping costs helps you make informed decisions about your auto transport service. While exact rates vary, several key elements contribute to the overall cost of shipping your vehicle to Puerto Rico.

Vehicle Size and Type Considerations

The dimensions and weight of your vehicle significantly impact shipping costs. Larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks require more space on transport carriers and ships, resulting in higher rates compared to standard cars. Additionally, specialty vehicles such as classic cars or luxury automobiles may require enclosed transport or special handling, which affects the overall cost of shipment. Heavy equipment like construction vehicles or machinery require specialized handling equipment and permits.

Roll-on/Roll-off vs. Container Shipping

When shipping to Puerto Rico, you’ll also need to consider whether Roll-on/Roll-off (RORO) shipping or container shipping better suits your needs. RORO shipping services, where vehicles are driven directly onto the vessel, are typically more economical, while container shipping provides maximum security for a higher price.

With RORO shipping, you benefit from faster loading and unloading processes, making it ideal for standard vehicles in good condition. Container shipping, on the other hand, offers complete protection from weather and maritime conditions, making it the preferred choice for luxury, classic, or high-value vehicles. Containers can also accommodate multiple vehicles at once, which might be cost-effective for dealers or multiple-car shipments.

Still making up your mind? Read our guide to help you decide: Should you ship your car by RORO or by container?

Seasonal Rate Variations and Peak Times

Auto transport rates to Puerto Rico fluctuate throughout the year based on demand and seasonal factors. Summer months typically see higher rates due to increased relocation activity, while winter months may offer more competitive pricing. Holiday seasons and the months leading up to major events in Puerto Rico can also significantly impact shipping rates.

Planning your shipment during off-peak seasons can help manage costs while still ensuring reliable service. Weather conditions, particularly during hurricane season from June through November, may affect both availability and pricing for auto transport services to the island.

Insurance Coverage and Additional Fees

Vehicle shipments typically include basic cargo insurance and liability coverage, protecting against potential damage during transit. Additional coverage options are available for enhanced peace of mind. Be aware of other potential fees such as port charges, customs processing fees, and any required local permits. Reputable car shipping companies should have transparent pricing policies that ensure you understand all costs upfront, with no hidden fees or surprises.

The Process of Shipping a Vehicle to Puerto Rico With RoadRunner

Final Delivery – Once cleared, your vehicle is either available for pickup at the port or delivered to your specified location in Puerto Rico.

Preparing Your Vehicle for Puerto Rico Transport

Proper preparation ensures your vehicle arrives in the same condition as when it departed. Following these guidelines helps prevent issues during transit and expedites the shipping process.

Required Vehicle Inspection and Documentation

A thorough inspection before shipment creates a detailed record of your vehicle’s condition. This inspection includes documenting any existing damage, mechanical issues, or cosmetic imperfections. You’ll need to provide several documents, including your vehicle title, registration, photo identification, and any required customs forms. We will guide you through the specific documentation requirements to ensure everything is in order before shipping.

Cleaning

A clean vehicle not only facilitates accurate inspection but also helps identify any changes in condition during transport. Here’s what needs attention before shipping:

Exterior – Wash and dry thoroughly

Undercarriage – Remove excessive dirt and debris

Interior – Vacuum and remove trash

Windows – Clean inside and out

Wheels and tires – Remove caked-on mud and dirt

Removing Personal Items

Shipping companies and insurance providers typically don’t cover personal items during auto transport. Additionally, customs regulations restrict what can remain in the vehicle during shipping. Remove all personal belongings, including electronics, clothing, tools, and any aftermarket accessories not permanently attached to the vehicle. This precaution protects your possessions and prevents potential delays during customs inspection.

Maintenance and Fuel Guidelines

Proper vehicle maintenance ensures safe loading, unloading, and transport. Here’s what to check:

Mechanical Checks:

Battery charge and security

Tire pressure and condition

Brakes

Engine operation

Fluid Levels:

Engine oil

Coolant

Brake fluid

Power steering fluid

Transmission fluid

Fuel level (maintain 1/4 tank or less)

The prevalence of car theft in Puerto Rico

The prevalence of car theft in Puerto Rico is a persistent and concerning issue that has significant implications for both residents and law enforcement. The island’s unique geographical and socio-economic factors contribute to the challenges in combating this criminal activity. Puerto Rico’s high population density, coupled with economic disparities, creates an environment where car theft becomes an attractive option for criminals seeking quick financial gains.

One of the primary drivers of car theft in Puerto Rico is the island’s economic struggles. High unemployment rates and poverty levels often lead individuals to resort to illicit activities, including auto theft, as a means of survival. The demand for spare parts in an environment where vehicle repairs can be expensive and legitimate access to parts may be limited, reinforcing the economic incentive for stolen cars.

Geographical factors also play a role in the prevalence of car theft. Puerto Rico’s extensive road network and diverse landscapes provide ample opportunities for criminals to exploit vulnerabilities. Urban areas with crowded streets and limited parking surveillance are particularly vulnerable to opportunistic thieves who can quickly blend into the dense population, making it challenging for law enforcement to apprehend culprits.

Inadequate law enforcement resources further exacerbate the problem. Limited manpower, outdated technology, and insufficient funding hinder the ability of authorities to combat car theft effectively. Additionally, coordination between local and federal agencies is often strained, impeding efforts to create a unified front against this criminal activity.

The impact of car theft extends beyond the immediate financial loss to victims. It contributes to an overall sense of insecurity within the community, eroding trust in public safety and law enforcement. Furthermore, the prevalence of stolen vehicles poses a broader threat to road safety, as criminals may use stolen cars for other illegal activities, including drug trafficking or violent crimes.

Addressing the issue of car theft in Puerto Rico requires a comprehensive approach that addresses both the root causes and the systemic challenges law enforcement faces. By investing in economic development, enhancing law enforcement capabilities, and fostering collaboration between local and federal agencies, there is hope for reducing the prevalence of car theft and creating a safer environment for the residents of Puerto Rico.

What you can do to prevent your car from being stolen

Protecting your car from theft requires a combination of vigilance, awareness, and proactive measures. One fundamental step is to always lock your vehicle when parked, even if it’s just for a short duration. Many car thefts occur because owners leave their vehicles unlocked, making them an easy target for opportunistic thieves. Additionally, ensure that all windows are closed before leaving the car unattended. This simple act adds an extra layer of security and deters potential criminals.

Investing in a quality steering wheel lock is another effective way to safeguard your vehicle. These devices act as a visible deterrent, making it challenging for thieves to bypass the steering mechanism. Similarly, using a gear shift lock can impede unauthorized individuals from easily manipulating the transmission and driving away with your car. While these may seem inconvenient initially, they significantly enhance your vehicle’s security.

Consider installing an alarm system or a car immobilizer to add an extra layer of protection. Modern car alarms are equipped with advanced features such as motion sensors and remote monitoring, providing an effective deterrent against theft. On the other hand, car immobilizers prevent the engine from starting without the proper key or code, making it extremely difficult for thieves to hotwire the vehicle.

Parking in well-lit and populated areas can also discourage thieves, as they are less likely to target a car in a visible and busy location. When possible, choose secure parking facilities or garages with surveillance cameras. If your car doesn’t already have one, adding a tracking system can aid in recovering your vehicle in the event it is stolen. GPS tracking technology allows you and law enforcement to monitor your car’s location in real-time.

Finally, be mindful of where you leave spare keys. Avoid hiding them in obvious places like the mat or glove compartment. Instead, keep spare keys securely or consider using a keyless entry system. Regularly assess the security features of your car and stay informed about new anti-theft technologies to stay one step ahead of potential thieves. Adopting these preventive measures can significantly reduce the risk of your car being stolen and enjoy peace of mind when leaving it unattended.

The most common reasons a car’s engine is not starting

A car’s engine not starting can be a frustrating and inconvenient experience. There are several reasons why this issue may occur, ranging from simple to more complex problems. A dead or weak battery is one of the primary reasons for a no-start situation. If the battery is not providing enough power to crank the engine, the car won’t start. This issue can often be resolved by jump-starting the vehicle or replacing the battery if it is old or faulty.

The starter motor is responsible for initiating the engine’s crankshaft rotation. If the starter motor fails, the engine won’t crank, and the car won’t start. A clicking noise when turning the key can indicate a faulty starter. A malfunctioning ignition switch can prevent the flow of electrical power to the starter motor. If the key turns, but the engine doesn’t crank, the ignition switch may be the culprit. Replacing the ignition switch is a common solution.

Issues with the fuel system, such as a clogged fuel filter, fuel pump failure, or insufficient fuel pressure, can lead to a no-start condition. Without an adequate fuel supply, the engine won’t ignite. Spark plugs play a crucial role in igniting the fuel-air mixture in the engine cylinders. If the spark plugs are fouled, or the ignition system is faulty, there may be no spark to initiate combustion. Problems with the airflow, such as a clogged air filter or a malfunctioning mass airflow sensor, can disrupt the air-fuel mixture ratio needed for combustion. This can lead to difficulty starting the engine or a complete failure.

Fuel injectors are responsible for delivering fuel into the engine cylinders. If they are clogged or not functioning correctly, the engine may not receive the proper fuel supply for ignition. The crankshaft position sensor provides information about the crankshaft’s position and speed to the engine control module. If this sensor fails, the engine may not start or stall after starting.

Modern cars have security systems that prevent the engine from starting if unauthorized access is detected. Issues with the key fob, immobilizer, or alarm system may lead to starting problems. The timing belt or chain synchronizes the movements of the engine’s crankshaft and camshaft. If the timing is off due to a damaged or broken timing belt/chain, the engine may not start.

Diagnosing the specific reason for a car’s engine not starting may require professional assistance, especially for complex issues. If troubleshooting basic components doesn’t resolve the problem, it’s advisable to consult with a qualified mechanic to identify and address the underlying issue.

How to prevent engine issues

Preventing engine issues for cars in Puerto Rico is crucial for maintaining the longevity and performance of your vehicle. Regular maintenance and good driving habits can significantly reduce the risk of costly engine problems. Adequate lubrication is essential for the smooth operation of an engine. Regular oil changes ensure the engine is properly lubricated, reducing friction and minimizing wear on crucial components. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for oil change intervals.

Using the correct type and viscosity of oil recommended by the vehicle manufacturer is crucial. The wrong oil can affect engine performance and may not provide the necessary protection for internal components. The air filter prevents dirt, dust, and debris from entering the engine. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, affecting combustion efficiency. Regularly check and replace the air filter according to the maintenance schedule.
Overheating can cause severe damage to the engine. Regularly check the coolant level, inspect hoses for leaks, and ensure the radiator is functioning correctly. Flush and replace the coolant as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. The timing belt or chain plays a crucial role in synchronizing the movement of the engine’s crankshaft and camshaft. If it fails, it can result in significant engine damage. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for timing belt replacement.

Besides oil and coolant, regularly check other fluid levels, including transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Maintaining proper fluid levels is essential for various engine functions. Aggressive driving can put unnecessary stress on the engine and its components. Avoid sudden acceleration, abrupt stops, and high-speed driving. Gradual acceleration and deceleration are gentler on the engine and contribute to longevity.

Allow the engine to warm up before driving, especially in cold weather. This allows the oil to circulate and lubricate engine components adequately. Avoid revving the engine excessively during the warm-up period. Choose a reputable gas station and use high-quality fuel. Poor-quality fuel can contain contaminants that may harm the engine and fuel system. Consider using fuel additives periodically to clean fuel injectors and maintain fuel system health.

Inspect the engine belts and pulleys for signs of wear or damage. Replace any belts that show cracks, fraying, or excessive wear. Tensioners and pulleys should also be in good condition to ensure proper belt functioning. The exhaust system plays a crucial role in emissions control and engine performance. Regularly inspect for leaks, rust, or damage. Address any issues promptly to prevent exhaust-related engine problems.

Consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual and follow the recommended maintenance schedule. Regular service intervals are designed to address specific needs at different mileage milestones, ensuring the engine’s overall health. By incorporating these preventative measures into your car care routine, you can significantly reduce the risk of engine issues and enjoy a reliable and efficient vehicle. Regular inspections, timely maintenance, and responsible driving habits are key to keeping your engine in optimal condition for years to come.

Checking behind you

Backing out of a parking spot can be pretty dangerous if not done correctly. Unfortunately, other drivers will sometimes try to quickly drive past you when you are backing out of a space rather than wait for you to complete backing out. You also need to worry about pedestrians who are not paying attention walking by the rear of your vehicle at the exact moment that you back out. That is why you need to be sure to check both behind you and in any direction that oncoming vehicle or foot traffic could be coming from prior to backing out as well as while you back out.

Before you back out, take a look directly behind you. If you have a rearview camera, this will make things even easier. You also must try to tell if you can see in both directions to the side of you to the rear in order to see if any cars or people are coming. Unfortunately, sometimes due to a larger car or a car with dark windows, this will not be possible. That is why when you do start backing out, you need to do so very slowly and with extreme caution.

Backing out

When you start backing out keep your head turned backwards over your shoulder as far as you can in the direction that you will reverse towards. So, if you plan on driving right after you back out, you will be initially reversing towards the left. Thus, you should keep your head turned over your left shoulder. If you will be going left after you back out, keep your head turned over your right shoulder as you back out. If you hear a horn behind you, stop immediately. Check in all directions, if there is a car close by, pull back into the spot and wait for the car to pass before attempting to back out again.

Once you back out successfully and safely, put your car into drive without taking your foot off the brake. Then, with your foot still on the brake, check again in all directions to make sure the coast is clear in order for you to drive away safely. Finally, regularly check to ensure that your brake and reverse lights are working on your vehicle. If they are not, other drivers will not have anyway of knowing that you are backing out until you actually do which might not be enough to avoid a collision.

Wrapping up

Backing out of a parking space is not that difficult to execute. Doing so with complete awareness and safety is where the effort comes in. Unfortunately, you cannot always have complete vision in all directions when you back out depending on the vehicles parked to either side of you. But, if you check directly behind you and in both directions to your rear before you back out as well as backing out slowly and continuing to watch behind you as you do, you will maximize your chances at completing a successful and safe back-out of your parking stall.

How long can you drive on a donut for

When you get a flat tire, having a donut to drive on temporarily will be the lifeline that spares you from being stuck for an extended period as well as having to get your car towed. However, you cannot drive on your donut as if it were a new or even heavily used real tire. Donuts are smaller and are much less durable than regular tires so even the slightest amount of over-use can cause them to go flat and/or blow out as well. If that happens, then you will really be in a jam.

Generally, you should never drive on a donut for more than seventy-five miles or for longer than twenty-four hours. Also, be sure you never exceed a speed of fifty miles per hour when you are driving on a donut. Once you finish driving on your donut, be sure to check the tire pressure and fill it with some air because driving on it, even for a short period, very likely caused significant loss of pressure.

What to do with your flat tire

When you get a flat, remove the tire and put your donut on, you might be wondering what to do with your flat tire. One thing you should definitely not do is leave it on the side of the road because that could be considered littering, and you still might be able to get that tire repaired. So, throw the flat in your trunk and show it to your tire professional when you bring your car in.

They will let you know if your old tire can be repaired, whether it will be worth it to do so or if you will need to purchase a new or used tire. If your old tire cannot be repaired, the tire repair shop will be able to properly dispose of your old tire.

Wrapping up

Keeping a spare tire or donut in your car at all times is an absolute must just in case you end up with a flat. If you do end up driving on a donut, do your best to keep it brief as your donut is only meant to be driven on for seventy-five miles or one day maximum. When you do get a flat tire off of your car and the donut on, throw the flat in your trunk and the tire professional that you bring your car to will be able to let you know what to do next.

How far away from a hydrant you must park

When you are parking in Puerto Rico, you must always park at least five meters away from a fire hydrant in either direction. This translates to about sixteen and a half feet. To make it easier to tell how far that is with the naked eye, think of this in terms of car length. The average car is about fifteen feet long. So as long as there is enough room for another car to park in between your car and the hydrant, you should be fine parking there.

The penalties for parking too close to a hydrant

If you are caught parking too close to a fire hydrant in Puerto Rico, you will be ticketed and the fine will be fifty dollars. This is a non-moving violation so your car insurance rates will not be affected. However, if you park near a fire hydrant when the fire department needs to use it, your car could be towed, or your windows could be broken so that a fire hose can be effectively run through your car if you are actually blocking access to the hydrant. In either of these cases, it will cost you at least two hundred dollars or more when all is said and done.

If you do block or even partially block a fire hydrant and a fire emergency occurs in the area, odds are you will likely also receive a stern talking to from police. You could also be the reason that the firefighters end up unable to properly fight a fire which could lead to additional property damage, injury or even death for which you could technically be sued for if your car is documented to have been blocking a fire hydrant at the time of that particular fire.

Wrapping up

Parking to close to a fire hydrant or flat out blocking a fire hydrant, even for a short period, is very irresponsible and selfish. Doing so could cost someone their life in the case of a nearby fire emergency. Even if that does not happen, you could end up with your car being towed, broken windows or at least a ticket and fine. In short, never park too close to a fire hydrant. In Puerto Rico, the rule of thumb is to make sure that your car has at least one car length in between it and a fire hydrant when parking.

Where do you do most of your driving?

When considering the ideal car size for driving in Puerto Rico, several factors come into play due to the island’s unique characteristics. Puerto Rico features a mix of urban congestion, winding mountain roads, and open highways. Considering these aspects, a compact or midsize car would generally be the best choice for navigating Puerto Rico’s diverse terrain and traffic conditions.

Compact cars, like hatchbacks or small sedans, offer maneuverability and fuel efficiency advantages. They are well-suited for congested urban areas and tight streets. Their smaller size makes them agile and easier to handle, which can be particularly useful when navigating through traffic or on narrower roads.

Midsize cars strike a balance between compact and larger vehicles, offering more interior space and comfort for passengers while maintaining reasonable fuel efficiency and maneuverability. This makes them suitable for both urban driving and longer journeys. They can handle Puerto Rico’s varying road conditions, from the busy streets of San Juan to the more challenging terrains found in rural areas and mountainous regions.

While larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks might be tempting for their perceived safety and off-road capability, they can be less practical in Puerto Rico due to their size and potential fuel consumption. The island’s smaller roads can make larger vehicles cumbersome to drive. Additionally, fuel costs can be higher than on the mainland, so opting for a more fuel-efficient option is financially prudent.

Where will you be able to park?

In Puerto Rico, parking can present a unique challenge due to the island’s limited parking spaces, narrow streets, and varying urban layouts. The size of your car plays a crucial role in how well you can navigate and park in this environment.

Opting for a compact or small-sized car is generally advantageous for parking in Puerto Rico. The island’s urban centers, such as San Juan, often have tight streets and limited parking spots. A compact car’s smaller dimensions make it easier to maneuver through congested areas and fit into tight parking spaces, which can be a significant advantage in Puerto Rico’s urban landscape.

Smaller cars also excel in finding parking in densely populated areas where larger vehicles might struggle to fit. Parallel parking, a common requirement in many Puerto Rican cities, becomes less stressful with a smaller vehicle. Compact cars are less likely to obstruct traffic or encroach on pedestrian pathways when parked.

While larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks might offer a sense of security and visibility, they can be disadvantaged when parking in Puerto Rico. Their size can make navigating through narrow streets challenging and finding suitable parking spots more difficult. They might even incur additional parking fees due to their larger size.

The basics about shipping your car northbound to the United States from Puerto Rico

Shipping your car from Puerto Rico to the United States is easy when you ship with Puerto Rico Car Transport. However, there still are a few things that you will need to get in order before you ship your car. This guide will tell you all you need to know about getting ready to ship your car from Puerto Rico to the US.

One of the most common questions we get is “How much will it cost to ship my car from Puerto Rico to the US?” and the answer is that it depends. The cost of shipping your car from Puerto Rico to the United States depends on a few things such as what kind of car you are shipping, where in the US you are shipping it to, the time of year that you are shipping it and more.

As an example, if you shipped a 2015 Toyota Corolla from Puerto Rico to New York City in the middle of August 2019, it would cost you about $1800. Now, this price could change based on several things such as weather and carrier demand. Quotes are as accurate as possible but by the time you actually book prices are subject to change slightly.

Another question we get fairly often is “How long will it take to ship my car to the United States from Puerto Rico?” Using the same example above with the 2015 Toyota Corolla shipping in the middle of August 2019, it would take about two weeks’ time to be delivered to New York City.

The requirements to ship your car from Puerto Rico to the United States

There are several requirements for you if you want to ship your car from Puerto Rico to the United States. They are:

Registration – You will need to present the original registration as well as bringing a copy of the registration.

Title – You will need to give over a copy of the ownership title.

Driver’s license – You will need to have your driver’s license as well as a copy of the license. It is highly recommended that on the copy, you enlarge your license.

*Notarized Letter of Authorization by a licensed lawyer from Puerto Rico – You only need this if you are not the cars owner.* You can get an example of this and have any questions about it answered by calling 904-322-7644 ext. 663 or by emailing Info@PuertoRicoCarTransport.com.

No Debt Certificate from ACAA – These certificates are only valid for thirty days. You can obtain it here.

Certificate of pre-inspection by the Puerto Rico Police Division of Stolen Vehicles – You will need to get this from your closest police Precinct. These are only valid for five days so don’t get it too soon before your shipment.

Certificate of “No Fines” from DTOP or “Obras Públicas” – These are only valid for three days so you will need to get it right before you bring your car to the port.

A Receipt of Pressure Wash and Clean – You must have the engine, exterior, chassis and wheel well cleaned and get the receipt to state that they have been washed.

No more than a quarter tank of gas – This is because of fire regulations on-board the ship. There is no siphoning service provided so be sure you have no more than a quarter tank of gas when you drop your car off.

VIN – You must have the Vehicle Identification Number on the hood, doors, trunk and dashboard. If you have replaced some of these parts, then you must have documentation for each replaced part with you when you drop your car off at the port.

You can find a printable checklist right here.

These requirements are different than the requirements to shipping your car to Puerto Rico

Shipping your car to Puerto Rico from the United States will obviously entail some different things. For example, you need your license and social security card when you pick your car up in Puerto Rico. That is different than when you are picking your car up in the United States.

For a full list of the requirements for shipping your car TO Puerto Rico, you can click here.
