The basics about shipping your car northbound to the United States from Puerto Rico

Shipping your car from Puerto Rico to the United States is easy when you ship with Puerto Rico Car Transport. However, there still are a few things that you will need to get in order before you ship your car. This guide will tell you all you need to know about getting ready to ship your car from Puerto Rico to the US.

One of the most common questions we get is “How much will it cost to ship my car from Puerto Rico to the US?” and the answer is that it depends. The cost of shipping your car from Puerto Rico to the United States depends on a few things such as what kind of car you are shipping, where in the US you are shipping it to, the time of year that you are shipping it and more.

As an example, if you shipped a 2015 Toyota Corolla from Puerto Rico to New York City in the middle of August 2019, it would cost you about $1800. Now, this price could change based on several things such as weather and carrier demand. Quotes are as accurate as possible but by the time you actually book prices are subject to change slightly.

Another question we get fairly often is “How long will it take to ship my car to the United States from Puerto Rico?” Using the same example above with the 2015 Toyota Corolla shipping in the middle of August 2019, it would take about two weeks’ time to be delivered to New York City.

The requirements to ship your car from Puerto Rico to the United States

There are several requirements for you if you want to ship your car from Puerto Rico to the United States. They are:

  • Registration – You will need to present the original registration as well as bringing a copy of the registration.
  • Title – You will need to give over a copy of the ownership title.
  • Driver’s license – You will need to have your driver’s license as well as a copy of the license. It is highly recommended that on the copy, you enlarge your license.
  • *Notarized Letter of Authorization by a licensed lawyer from Puerto Rico – You only need this if you are not the cars owner.* You can get an example of this and have any questions about it answered by calling 904-322-7644 ext. 663 or by emailing Info@PuertoRicoCarTransport.com.
  • No Debt Certificate from ACAA – These certificates are only valid for thirty days. You can obtain it here.
  • Certificate of pre-inspection by the Puerto Rico Police Division of Stolen Vehicles – You will need to get this from your closest police Precinct. These are only valid for five days so don’t get it too soon before your shipment.
  • Certificate of “No Fines” from DTOP or “Obras Públicas” – These are only valid for three days so you will need to get it right before you bring your car to the port.
  • A Receipt of Pressure Wash and Clean – You must have the engine, exterior, chassis and wheel well cleaned and get the receipt to state that they have been washed.
  • No more than a quarter tank of gas – This is because of fire regulations on-board the ship. There is no siphoning service provided so be sure you have no more than a quarter tank of gas when you drop your car off.
  • VIN – You must have the Vehicle Identification Number on the hood, doors, trunk and dashboard. If you have replaced some of these parts, then you must have documentation for each replaced part with you when you drop your car off at the port.

You can find a printable checklist right here.
