The cost to ship a car to Puerto Rico requires understanding various cost factors that can influence your total shipping expense. When planning to transport your car to this Caribbean island, it’s important to have a clear picture of the pricing structure and what services are included in your quote.

What Determines Puerto Rico Car Shipping Costs

Before requesting a quote for your Puerto Rico auto transport, it’s helpful to understand the various elements that make up your final price. Several key factors influence how much you’ll pay to ship your vehicle to San Juan or other destinations on the island:

Base Rates and Starting Prices

The base rate for international shipping to Puerto Rico covers the basic transportation service from a mainland port to San Juan. These rates vary based on current fuel costs, vessel availability, and market demand. For standard passenger vehicles not exceeding 900 cubic feet, the base rates are straightforward and can be calculated using an online car shipping calculator for an instant quote. Larger vehicles or specialty equipment may require custom pricing beyond the standard rates.

Trust our certified carriers to ship cars from Puerto Rico safely and deliver your vehicle directly to your door anywhere on the mainland.

Port-to-Port vs. Door-to-Port Service Options

When shipping cars to Puerto Rico, you have two primary service options that significantly impact your total cost:

Port-to-Port Service: The most economical option where you deliver your vehicle to the departure port (typically Jacksonville, FL or Pennsauken, NJ) and pick it up at the San Juan port. This service generally costs less than door-to-port options since you handle the transportation to and from the ports.

Door-to-Port Service: This premium option includes pickup from your mainland location by a certified transport truck and delivery to the departure port. This option adds convenience but increases the overall cost of shipping your vehicle to Puerto Rico.

Additional Transport Fees

Beyond the base transport cost, several additional fees may apply when shipping to Puerto Rico:

Port Processing Fees: Standard fees are applied at ports for handling and processing

Documentation Fees: Costs associated with processing the required paperwork

Customs Clearance: While Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, vehicles still undergo customs processing

Payment options include credit card, wire transfer, or electronic funds transfer, with payment required before the shipping date.

Get your instant car shipping quote now and receive guaranteed lowest rates for your Puerto Rico vehicle transport.

Factors That Impact Your Puerto Rico Shipping Price

The final cost of shipping your vehicle depends on several variables unique to your specific circumstances. Understanding these factors can help you anticipate potential cost increases or identify savings opportunities:

Vehicle Size and Type Considerations

The dimensions and weight of your vehicle significantly impact shipping costs:

Standard Cars: Sedans and compact cars typically fall within the standard rate category

SUVs and Trucks: May incur a premium over standard rates due to their larger size

Specialty Vehicles: Oversized vehicles, hybrid vehicles, or modified cars may require special handling and incur additional fees

Seasonal Price Fluctuations and Timing

Puerto Rico car shipping prices fluctuate throughout the year based on demand patterns:

Peak Season (May-September): Prices may increase during summer when demand is highest

Off-Peak Season (October-April): Better rates are often available during slower periods

Booking your service with car shipping companies in advance generally secures better rates than last-minute arrangements. Additionally, weekly sailing schedules influence availability and potentially pricing, with regular departures from Jacksonville on Thursdays and Philadelphia on Thursdays.

Port Location and Transit Distance

Your chosen departure port and distance from it affect your total shipping cost:

East Coast Ports: Jacksonville, FL, offers the shortest transit times (approximately 6 days) and typically the most economical rates for shipping to San Juan

Northeast Ports: Shipping from Pennsauken, NJ, generally costs slightly more but may be more convenient for those in the Northeast

West Coast Origins: Vehicles coming from western states incur higher transport costs to reach the departure port if door-to-port service is selected

Transit times vary by route, with Jacksonville to San Juan taking approximately 6 days and Philadelphia to San Juan around 5 days.

Preparing Your Vehicle for Puerto Rico Transport

Proper preparation not only ensures a smooth shipping process but can also help avoid unexpected costs or delays that might affect your bottom line:

Required Documentation and Customs Procedures

While Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, specific documentation is still required for vehicle shipping:

Vehicle title or lien holder authorization

Valid government-issued photo ID

Vehicle registration

Booking number provided by your shipping company

Notarized authorization letter if someone else is shipping on your behalf

Having these documents organized before shipping helps prevent delays that could result in additional storage fees.

Vehicle Inspection and Preparation Guidelines

Before shipping your car to Puerto Rico, it must meet certain requirements:

Pre-Shipping Inspection: Document your vehicle’s condition with photos and a detailed inspection report

Fuel Requirements: Maintain less than 1/4 tank of gas (a Coast Guard regulation, #176.905)

Mechanical Condition: Ensure your vehicle is in running condition with functioning brakes

Alarm Systems: Disable car alarms to prevent battery drain during transit

Spare Keys: Provide an extra set of keys for loading/unloading operations

Non-running vehicles may require special arrangements and generally incur additional fees.

Cleaning and Personal Item Restrictions

Your vehicle must be properly prepared before shipment:

Interior and Exterior Cleaning: All vehicles must be clean upon drop-off or pickup

Personal Belongings: Remove all personal items from the vehicle as they are not permitted during shipping

Permitted Items: Only jumper cables and, in some cases, automobile parts related to the vehicle are allowed to remain

Prohibited Items: No personal belongings can be shipped inside the vehicle,e including spare tire, jack, or loose accessories

Following these guidelines helps avoid additional charges and ensures compliance with shipping regulations.

When shipping a vehicle to Puerto Rico, selecting the right shipping method can significantly impact your experience, timeline, and budget. Understanding the differences between door-to-port and door-to-door shipping options is essential for making an informed decision that meets your specific needs. This guide examines the key distinctions between these shipping methods, helping you determine which option is best suited for your Puerto Rico vehicle shipping requirements.

Understanding Your Puerto Rico Vehicle Shipping Options

Before committing to a particular international shipping method, it’s important to understand the available options for transporting your vehicle from Puerto Rico. Deciding on door-to-port vs. door-to-door shipping for Puerto Rico depends on your budget, timeline, and convenience preferences:

What is Door-to-Port Service?

Door-to-port service combines mainland pickup with port delivery in San Juan. With this option, a carrier picks up your vehicle directly from your residence or business anywhere in the continental United States. Your vehicle is then transported to the departure port (typically Jacksonville, FL or Pennsauken, NJ), where it’s loaded onto a vessel bound for Puerto Rico. Once the ship arrives in San Juan, you or your representative will need to retrieve the vehicle from the port.

Find straightforward answers to common Puerto Rico vehicle shipping questions in our FAQ section.

What is Door-to-Door Service?

Door-to-door service provides complete transportation from pickup at your mainland location to final delivery at your destination in Puerto Rico. The process eliminates all transportation logistics on your part:

Mainland Pickup: Your vehicle is collected directly from your location

Ocean Transit: Your vehicle travels aboard a specialized vessel to Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico Delivery: Upon arrival, your vehicle is transported to your specified address

With this premium option, a carrier picks up your vehicle from your residence or business anywhere in the continental United States and manages the entire shipping process. Your vehicle is transported to the departure port, loaded onto a vessel bound for Puerto Rico, and upon arrival in San Juan, delivered directly to your specified address on the island.

RoRo vs. Container Shipping to Puerto Rico

When shipping to Puerto Rico, the standard international freight method is Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) shipping. This approach involves driving vehicles directly onto specialized vessels, securing them in place for ocean transport, and protecting them from outdoor elements during transit. For specialty or high-value vehicles, container shipping provides maximum protection but at a higher cost. Container options include shared container load (multiple vehicles in one container), exclusive container use for enhanced security, and climate-controlled options for classic or luxury vehicles.

Specialty and High Value Vehicle Shipping

For specialty or high-value vehicles, container shipping internationally provides maximum protection but at a higher cost. Container options include:

Shared Container Load: Multiple vehicles can be transported together in one container to reduce costs

Exclusive Container Use: Private containers offer enhanced security and peace of mind for valuable vehicles

Climate-Controlled Options: Special temperature-regulated containers protect classic or luxury vehicles from environmental factors

These premium international shipping options ensure optimal protection during the ocean journey to Puerto Rico. Owners of collectible, exotic, or highly valuable vehicles often prefer these methods despite the higher cost.

Choosing Between Port and Door Service

Selecting the port or door services depends on several key factors, including cost, convenience, and timeline considerations:

Cost Considerations and Shipping Rates

The price difference between door-to-port and door-to-door service is primarily determined by the additional transportation components. Door-to-door service typically commands a premium price because it includes both mainland pickup and final delivery in Puerto Rico. Several factors influence your overall shipping cost:

Vehicle Size and Weight: Larger and heavier vehicles require more space and specialized handling

Pickup and Delivery Locations: Distance from your mainland location to the departure port and from San Juan to your final destination affects transport costs

Seasonal Demand Fluctuations: Rates may vary depending on the time of year and current demand

Fuel Surcharges: Variable fuel costs can impact the total price of your shipment

Special Handling Requirements: Oversized vehicles or heavy equipment may need additional equipment

For standard vehicles not exceeding 900 cubic feet, base rates are straightforward. Larger vehicles, including trucks, SUVs, and specialty equipment, may require custom quotes from the shipping company.

Documentation and Customs Requirements

All vehicles shipping to Puerto Rico require proper documentation regardless of service type. You’ll need to provide the original vehicle title or lien holder authorization, a valid government-issued ID, vehicle registration (current or within 30 days of expiration), a notarized authorization letter if someone else is handling the process, and all vehicle keys. Additional customs clearance requirements include proof of ownership, import declaration forms, and payment of excise tax upon arrival, which is separate from your shipping costs.

Transit Times and Delivery Options

Total transit time varies depending on your service choice and mainland location. Door-to-port service transit times include:

Mainland Pickup and Transport to Departure Port: 1-5 days

Processing at Departure Port: 1-2 days

Ocean Freight Transit to San Juan: 6-8 days from Florida or 8-14 days from New Jersey

Port Processing in San Juan: 2-3 days

Door to Door Service

Door-to-door service includes additional time for local delivery in Puerto Rico:

Mainland Pickup and Transport to Departure Port: 1-5 days

Processing at Departure Port: 1-2 days

Ocean Freight Transit to San Juan: 6-8 days from Florida or 8-14 days from New Jersey

Port Processing and Local Delivery in Puerto Rico: 3-5 days

For time-sensitive shipments, scheduling your pickup to align with the weekly sailing schedule maximizes efficiency.

Tips for Successful Puerto Rico Vehicle Shipping

Ensuring your vehicle shipment arrives safely requires attention to several important details:

Vehicle Preparation Requirements

Proper preparation plays a major role before your vehicle departs. You should clean the vehicle thoroughly (interior and exterior), remove all personal belongings (with exceptions for jumper cables and some vehicle parts), and maintain less than 1/4 tank of gas as required by Coast Guard regulation #176.905. It’s also important to document any existing damage with photos, disable alarm systems, and check tire pressure and mechanical condition. These requirements apply regardless of shipping method chosen and help prevent delays or complications during the shipping process.

Tracking and Communication

Vehicle shipping to Puerto Rico now features advanced tracking technology that keeps you informed throughout the transport process. Professional auto transporters offer multiple ways to stay updated on your shipment status:

Real-Time Tracking: Online systems provide up-to-the-minute information about your vehicle’s location during transit.

Arrival Estimates: Regular updates include projected delivery dates based on current transit progress.

Milestone Notifications: You receive alerts when your vehicle reaches important checkpoints like port arrival or vessel loading.

Direct Coordinator Contact: Shipping specialists remain available to answer specific questions about your shipment.

This 24/7 tracking access gives you peace of mind as you monitor your vehicle’s journey from initial pickup through ocean transit to final arrival in San Juan.

Registering a vehicle in Puerto Rico is a necessary step for anyone shipping a car to or purchasing a vehicle on the island. As a U.S. territory, Puerto Rico follows similar registration protocols to the mainland but with its own special requirements and procedures that must be followed to stay legal on the road.

If you’re caught driving an unregistered vehicle in Puerto Rico, you could face fines of at least $100, potential license suspension, and points that could increase your insurance premiums. For U.S. residents, the process is somewhat simpler than for non-residents, but still requires attention to detail and patience. Your U.S. driver’s license is valid in Puerto Rico, but any vehicle must be registered within three days of arrival, with typical registration costs around $300.

Below, we will explain everything you need to know about registering your car in Puerto Rico, from required documentation to step-by-step instructions and helpful tips to make the process as smooth as possible.

Required Documentation for Vehicle Registration

The documentation needed to register your vehicle in Puerto Rico varies depending on whether you’re a resident or non-resident. Having all required paperwork ready before beginning the process can save significant time and frustration.

For Puerto Rico Residents

If you’re a resident of Puerto Rico, you’ll need to prepare the following documents:

Valid Puerto Rico driver’s license

Original vehicle title (clean and free of liens)

Purchase invoice or bill of sale

Vehicle shipping documents (if imported from the mainland)

Proof of excise tax payment

Social Security card

Proof of address (utility bill, lease agreement, etc.)

For Non-Residents

Non-residents face additional requirements when registering a vehicle:

Valid U.S. driver’s license

Passport

Social Security card

Original vehicle title

Import documents

Proof of excise tax payment

Proof of property ownership or rental agreement in Puerto Rico

It’s important to note that the registration process is generally more straightforward for residents. If you’re planning an extended stay in Puerto Rico, it may be worth considering becoming a resident first before attempting to register your vehicle.

Required Forms

In addition to personal documentation, you’ll need to obtain and complete several forms during the registration process:

“Expedicion Comprobantes de Pago” form (from DTOP)

Emissions test certificate

“Informe de Investigation” form (provided after inspection)

Step-by-Step Registration Process

Registering your car in Puerto Rico involves multiple steps and likely several days to complete. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the process:

1. Visit the DTOP Office

Your first stop will be the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTOP) office. Be prepared for potentially long wait times—bringing something to keep yourself occupied is recommended. At this office, you’ll complete and receive the “Expedicion Comprobantes de Pago” form, which serves two important purposes:

Request for an emissions test

Bill for payment at the Hacienda (Treasury) office

Pro Tip: Don’t lose this form, as you’ll need it throughout the registration process. If misplaced, you’ll have to start the entire process over again.

2. Complete Emissions Testing

Take your form to an authorized emissions testing station (known locally as a “garage”). Testing typically costs between $20 and $50, depending on the location, and takes only a few minutes to complete. Upon passing, you’ll receive a certificate confirming that your vehicle meets emissions standards.

3. Pay Fees at Hacienda

With your emissions certificate in hand, proceed to a Hacienda (Treasury) office to pay the required fees. Similar to DTOP, expect significant wait times. Consider visiting offices in less populated areas, which often have shorter lines.

Important: Some Hacienda offices may only accept cash payments, so come prepared with sufficient funds.

4. Return to DTOP for Vehicle Inspection

After paying your fees, you’ll receive a receipt that must be taken back to the DTOP office. Officials will verify your payment and conduct a physical inspection of your vehicle to confirm:

The information provided matches the actual vehicle

The vehicle is not reported stolen

The vehicle identification number (VIN) is legitimate

5. Complete Final Registration

Following the inspection, you’ll receive the “Informe de Investigation” form. Take this document back inside the DTOP office to complete the final registration process. Once approved, you’ll receive your registration sticker (marbete).

6. Apply Registration Sticker

Place the registration sticker on the inside of your windshield as soon as possible. This sticker must be clearly visible, as it serves as immediate proof of registration for law enforcement.

Registration Renewal Process

Vehicle registrations in Puerto Rico expire annually and must be renewed to avoid penalties. Understanding the renewal process is essential for ongoing compliance.

Annual Renewal Requirements

The renewal process generally includes:

Vehicle inspection at an authorized garage

Payment of any outstanding traffic fines

Proof of insurance (compulsory or private)

Payment of annual registration fees

Receipt of new marbete (car tag)

Required Documentation for Renewal

For renewal, you’ll typically need:

Current registration paperwork

Vehicle inspection certificate

Proof of insurance

Valid ID

Payment for renewal fees

Renewal Timeline

Registration renewals in Puerto Rico follow a schedule based on the last digit of your license plate number:

Plates ending in 1: January

Plates ending in 2: February

Plates ending in 3: March

And so on…

The DTOP does not send renewal reminders, so it’s your responsibility to track your expiration date and renew on time to avoid penalties.

Tips for a Smoother Registration Experience

Here are some practical tips to help you through the car registration process in Puerto Rico more efficiently:

Prepare Comprehensive Documentation: Before visiting any government office, create a folder with all original documents and make copies of everything.

Visit Offices Early in the Morning: Arrive at DTOP and Hacienda offices before they open to minimize wait times and increase your chances of completing that day’s steps.

Consider Offices in Rural Areas: Government offices in less populated towns often have significantly shorter wait times than those in San Juan and other major cities.

Bring Cash for All Transactions: Many government offices have inconsistent card payment systems, so having sufficient cash ensures you won’t face payment issues.

Learn Basic Spanish Phrases: While many officials speak some English, knowing key terms related to vehicle registration can help avoid miscommunications.

Be Prepared for Multiple Visits: Accept that the process may take several days and plan accordingly with flexible scheduling.

Pack Essentials for Long Waits: Bring water, snacks, phone chargers, and something to read during potentially lengthy wait times.

Keep All Documentation Secure: Store all receipts, forms, and certificates safely between visits, as losing any document means starting the process over.

These local procedures require patience and preparation, which will significantly reduce your stress during the registration process.

When relocating to Puerto Rico or transporting a vehicle to the island, understanding the auto shipping process is essential for a successful experience. Shipping a car to this Caribbean destination involves unique considerations, from maritime transport requirements to customs regulations and proper vehicle preparation. This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about Puerto Rico car shipping, from basic requirements to preparation steps and cost considerations, ensuring you can make informed decisions for a smooth vehicle transport journey.

The Basics of Puerto Rico Car Shipping

Puerto Rico’s unique position as a U.S. territory means that shipping a vehicle there involves specific considerations that differ from standard continental auto transport. The process combines overland transport within the mainland United States with maritime shipping to reach the island. Your vehicle will be transported by a specialized ocean carrier equipped to handle automotive cargo safely across maritime routes.

Port-to-Port vs. Door-to-Door Auto Transport Options

When shipping your car to Puerto Rico, you have two primary service options. Port-to-port service requires you to deliver your vehicle to the departure port and pick it up from the port in San Juan. While this option can be more economical, it requires additional coordination on your part.

Door-to-door service, on the other hand, provides complete transportation from your mainland location directly to your specified destination in Puerto Rico. The auto shipping company handles all the logistics, including overland transport to the departure port and coordination with maritime shipping services.

Customs Clearance

Although Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, vehicles must still clear customs upon arrival. The process requires specific documentation, including proof of ownership (title or lienholder authorization), valid identification, and completed customs forms. Working with an experienced auto transport company can help streamline this process, as they can guide you through the documentation requirements and ensure all paperwork is properly prepared before your vehicle departs. This preparation helps prevent delays and ensures smooth customs clearance upon arrival in San Juan.

Average Transit Times for Shipping Cars to Puerto Rico

The duration of your auto transport to Puerto Rico varies based on several factors, including your departure location and chosen service level. Here’s a general timeline of what to expect:

Mainland pickup to departure port: 1-5 days depending on location

Port processing and loading: 2-3 days

Ocean transit to San Juan: 6-8 days

Customs clearance and processing: 2-3 days

Delivery to final destination: 1-2 days (if applicable)

Cost Factors for Puerto Rico Auto Transport

Understanding the factors that influence your shipping costs helps you make informed decisions about your auto transport service. While exact rates vary, several key elements contribute to the overall cost of shipping your vehicle to Puerto Rico.

Vehicle Size and Type Considerations

The dimensions and weight of your vehicle significantly impact shipping costs. Larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks require more space on transport carriers and ships, resulting in higher rates compared to standard cars. Additionally, specialty vehicles such as classic cars or luxury automobiles may require enclosed transport or special handling, which affects the overall cost of shipment. Heavy equipment like construction vehicles or machinery require specialized handling equipment and permits.

Roll-on/Roll-off vs. Container Shipping

When shipping to Puerto Rico, you’ll also need to consider whether Roll-on/Roll-off (RORO) shipping or container shipping better suits your needs. RORO shipping services, where vehicles are driven directly onto the vessel, are typically more economical, while container shipping provides maximum security for a higher price.

With RORO shipping, you benefit from faster loading and unloading processes, making it ideal for standard vehicles in good condition. Container shipping, on the other hand, offers complete protection from weather and maritime conditions, making it the preferred choice for luxury, classic, or high-value vehicles. Containers can also accommodate multiple vehicles at once, which might be cost-effective for dealers or multiple-car shipments.

Still making up your mind? Read our guide to help you decide: Should you ship your car by RORO or by container?

Seasonal Rate Variations and Peak Times

Auto transport rates to Puerto Rico fluctuate throughout the year based on demand and seasonal factors. Summer months typically see higher rates due to increased relocation activity, while winter months may offer more competitive pricing. Holiday seasons and the months leading up to major events in Puerto Rico can also significantly impact shipping rates.

Planning your shipment during off-peak seasons can help manage costs while still ensuring reliable service. Weather conditions, particularly during hurricane season from June through November, may affect both availability and pricing for auto transport services to the island.

Insurance Coverage and Additional Fees

Vehicle shipments typically include basic cargo insurance and liability coverage, protecting against potential damage during transit. Additional coverage options are available for enhanced peace of mind. Be aware of other potential fees such as port charges, customs processing fees, and any required local permits. Reputable car shipping companies should have transparent pricing policies that ensure you understand all costs upfront, with no hidden fees or surprises.

The Process of Shipping a Vehicle to Puerto Rico With RoadRunner

Working with a professional auto transport company like RoadRunner streamlines the Puerto Rico car shipping process. Here’s a step-by-step guide to how we make it happen:

Vehicle Pickup – Our carrier arrives at your location to collect your vehicle and transport it to the departure port.

Port Processing – Your vehicle is processed at the mainland port and prepared for ocean transport.

Maritime Transit – Your vehicle is safely loaded onto a specialized cargo vessel for the journey to San Juan.

Customs Clearance – Upon arrival, we handle all necessary customs documentation and processing.

Final Delivery – Once cleared, your vehicle is either available for pickup at the port or delivered to your specified location in Puerto Rico.

Preparing Your Vehicle for Puerto Rico Transport

Proper preparation ensures your vehicle arrives in the same condition as when it departed. Following these guidelines helps prevent issues during transit and expedites the shipping process.

Required Vehicle Inspection and Documentation

A thorough inspection before shipment creates a detailed record of your vehicle’s condition. This inspection includes documenting any existing damage, mechanical issues, or cosmetic imperfections. You’ll need to provide several documents, including your vehicle title, registration, photo identification, and any required customs forms. We will guide you through the specific documentation requirements to ensure everything is in order before shipping.

Cleaning

A clean vehicle not only facilitates accurate inspection but also helps identify any changes in condition during transport. Here’s what needs attention before shipping:

Exterior – Wash and dry thoroughly

Undercarriage – Remove excessive dirt and debris

Interior – Vacuum and remove trash

Windows – Clean inside and out

Wheels and tires – Remove caked-on mud and dirt

Removing Personal Items

Shipping companies and insurance providers typically don’t cover personal items during auto transport. Additionally, customs regulations restrict what can remain in the vehicle during shipping. Remove all personal belongings, including electronics, clothing, tools, and any aftermarket accessories not permanently attached to the vehicle. This precaution protects your possessions and prevents potential delays during customs inspection.

Maintenance and Fuel Guidelines

Proper vehicle maintenance ensures safe loading, unloading, and transport. Here’s what to check:

Mechanical Checks:

Battery charge and security

Tire pressure and condition

Brakes

Engine operation

Fluid Levels:

Engine oil

Coolant

Brake fluid

Power steering fluid

Transmission fluid

Fuel level (maintain 1/4 tank or less)

An Introduction to RORO Shipping

What is Roll-on/Roll-off Vehicle Transport?

RORO shipping represents one of the most established methods for transporting vehicles across oceans. This approach involves driving vehicles directly onto specialized vessels using built-in ramps, similar to boarding a ferry. The name “Roll-on/Roll-off” literally describes the loading and unloading process, where vehicles are driven onto the ship at the departure port and driven off at the destination. This method has been refined over decades since its widespread adoption following World War II, evolving into an essential transportation solution for both international shipping lanes and domestic maritime routes.

Different Types of RORO Vessels

The maritime industry has developed several specialized RORO vessel types to accommodate different cargo needs and operational requirements. Each type serves specific purposes in the vehicle shipping industry and offers varying capacities and features:

Large Medium-Speed Roll-on/Roll-off (LMSR) – Originally designed for military logistics, these vessels have been adapted for civilian use and offer extensive capacity for vehicle transport

Pure Car Carriers (PCC) – Specifically designed for automobile transport, featuring multiple decks optimized for passenger vehicles

Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTC) – Similar to PCCs but with higher deck clearances to accommodate larger vehicles

ConRO Vessels – Hybrid ships that combine container storage on deck with RORO capabilities below

RoPax – Combined passenger and vehicle transport vessels, commonly used for shorter maritime routes

Advantages of RORO Car Shipping Services

RORO shipping has established itself as a preferred method for many vehicle transport scenarios. It offers several compelling benefits that make it an attractive option for car owners and businesses:

Efficient Loading and Unloading – Significantly faster than other methods, reducing port time and overall transit duration

Cost-Effective – Generally more affordable than container shipping due to simplified handling procedures

Frequent Sailings – Regular schedules on major routes, including to and from Puerto Rico

Minimal Preparation Required – Vehicles can be driven directly onto the vessel without extensive packaging

Experienced Handling – Well-established procedures and trained personnel familiar with vehicle transport

Flexible Vehicle Types – Accommodates most standard vehicles without modification

Container Car Shipping for Vehicles

Types of Container Car Transport Options

Container car shipping provides various options for vehicle transport, each offering different levels of protection and capacity. These solutions can be tailored to meet specific requirements for vehicle security and handling.

Standard 20ft Container – Suitable for single vehicle transport with some space for additional items

High-Cube 40ft Container – Accommodates multiple vehicles or larger vehicles with extra height requirements

Shared Container Service – Cost-effective option where multiple vehicles share container space

Custom-Fitted Containers – Specialized containers with vehicle-specific securing systems

Climate-Controlled Containers – Premium option offering environmental protection during transit

Benefits of Container Auto Transport

Container shipping offers distinct advantages that make it particularly suitable for certain types of vehicles and shipping requirements. The enclosed nature of containers provides additional protection and security features that many vehicle owners value:

Complete Weather Protection – Full shelter from marine elements and weather conditions

Enhanced Security – Locked and sealed containers prevent unauthorized access

Flexible Delivery Options – Easy integration with multi-modal transport systems

Custom Securing Options – Specialized equipment for vehicle protection

Privacy – Discrete transport without visible exposure

Comparing RORO and Container Car Shipping Methods

Cost Analysis: RORO vs Container Rates

RORO shipping typically offers competitive pricing compared to other ocean transport methods. The cost structure is straightforward, with ocean freight rates primarily based on the vehicle’s size and the shipping distance. Factors that influence pricing include the vessel’s capacity utilization, fuel costs, and seasonal demand fluctuations. For routes to Puerto Rico, RORO often presents an economical choice due to established shipping lanes and regular service schedules.

Container car shipping typically commands a premium due to the additional equipment, handling requirements, and protection features provided. However, when shipping multiple vehicles or requiring specialized protection, container shipping may prove more cost-effective per vehicle.

Transit Times and Port Availability

Transit times vary between RORO and container services, influenced by factors such as route frequency, port calls, and handling procedures. RORO ships typically offer more frequent sailings to major ports like San Juan, potentially resulting in shorter overall transit times. Container services may require additional handling time but often provide more flexible routing options and broader port accessibility.

The Best Options for Different Vehicle Types

Choosing between RORO and container car shipping often depends on the specific vehicle being transported. Classic cars, exotic vehicles, and luxury automobiles typically benefit from the additional protection offered by container shipping. The enclosed environment provides peace of mind for valuable vehicles, protecting them from potential weather damage or exposure to salt air during the journey.

Owners of standard passenger vehicles, SUVs, and trucks often find RORO shipping perfectly suitable for their needs. The cost savings and simplified process make it an attractive option for these types of vehicles. However, modified vehicles with low ground clearance or special requirements might be better suited for container transport, where specific loading accommodations can be made.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is cheaper: RORO or container car shipping?

RORO shipping typically offers more economical rates for single vehicle transport due to its simplified loading and unloading process. However, when shipping multiple vehicles or requiring specialized protection, container car shipping may provide better value through shared container options and enhanced security features.

How long does shipping take with RORO versus container methods?

Transit times vary based on route and destination, but RORO shipping often offers more frequent sailings and faster loading/unloading procedures. Container shipping may require additional handling time but provides more flexible routing options and can be more predictable for certain destinations.

Is my car more secure in a container than with RORO shipping?

Container shipping provides enhanced security through a fully enclosed environment, locked containers, and specialized securing systems. While RORO shipping is also secure, containers offer additional protection from weather elements and complete privacy during transit.

When should I choose container shipping over RORO?

Container shipping is often the preferred choice for luxury, classic, or modified vehicles requiring maximum protection during transit. It’s also advantageous when shipping multiple vehicles together or when additional space is needed for personal items or vehicle accessories (within regulations).

Being safe on the side of the road

When you have car trouble in the middle of driving, the very first thing that you should do is pull over on the shoulder or side of the road completely out of the path of oncoming traffic. Once you do that, you must make sure that you are being safe before you can try and fix what has gone wrong with the vehicle. This will primarily entail being sure that you are completely visible to any other motorists that are driving by.

Being safe when you and your vehicle are stuck on the shoulder of the road will start with putting your hazard lights on and then checking to make sure you are far enough away from traffic prior to exiting your vehicle for any reason. Once you exit your vehicle, you should consider setting up road flares or mini-warning triangles. Both of these can be purchased online or at an auto store.

After that, you can take a look at your vehicle and the engine to see if what has gone wrong will be an easy and quick repair. If it is not, call the authorities for help. If you have a roadside assistance program, you can also call them to come and help instead.

Roadside assistance programs

Having a roadside assistance program can be a huge help in these types of situations. A program such as AAA will send out a driver who will do their best to resolve your issue. If they cannot, your car will quickly get towed to a nearby service station and you will also be given a ride there.

However, there is a very good chance that they will be able to resolve your vehicle’s issue. Typically, roadside assistance drivers can take care of flat tires, jumps, empty gas tanks, mechanical failures such as a slipped belt and more. These programs will cost you a monthly fee but are definitely worth it both for the peace of mind and the actual protection.

Wrapping up

When your car breaks down and you end up stuck on the side of the road, you will definitely not want you or your vehicle to get struck by a passing car and have matters get much worse. So, you will want to make sure you are as off to the side of the road as possible. Then put your hazard lights on. Once you do that, check to make sure that it is safe to exit your vehicle before you do so. After you exit your car, try to make it even more visible with road flares and/or mini-warning triangles. Once you have done this, you can check to see if you can fix the issue with your car. If you cannot, call the authorities or your roadside assistance program if you happen to have one.

Basics about off-roading in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a great place for off-roading with lots of great scenery such as beaches, mountains and forests. There are several spots that are preferable for off-roading on the island which we will get into detail about below.

The best spots to go off-roading in Puerto Rico

There are a bunch of spots in Puerto Rico where you can technically take your car off-road, but some spots are better than others. These are the best places in Puerto Rico to go off-roading:

El Yunque Rainforest – Likely the most famous place in Puerto Rico to go off-road, El Yunque rainforest has amazing views, lots of lush green scenery, wildlife and more. It is a must-not-miss stop for off-roading.

Carite Forest – Carite Forest is another fantastic place for off-roading in Puerto Rico. It has waterfalls, camp sites and a bunch of gorgeous views. You’ll definitely want to take the Jeep for a spin here.

Toro Negro – Toro Negro is considered a less popular alternative to El Yunque National Rainforest because it offers much of the same scenery and sight-seeing that El Yunque does.

Tips for off-roading

Before you head out to go off-roading in Puerto Rico, read these tips:

You have to bring your own car – If you are going to go off-roading in Puerto Rico, you will need to take your own vehicle. This means you cannot rent a car and go off-roading. Rental car companies in Puerto Rico always have clauses in their rental agreements that forbid you from taking the car off-road. So, technically, you could take a rental car off-roading in Puerto Rico but you would be fully responsible for any damage that occurs which is a distinct possibility since off-roading is so unpredictable. You should always use your own car in Puerto Rico to avoid a tough situation with the rental car companies. If you live in Puerto Rico and need your car shipped there, you can always contact us.

Perform the right checks – Be sure that you perform the right checks on your vehicle before you take it off-road. These checks include things like wiper fluid, tire pressure, oil and more. You can always have a mechanic perform a once-over for you too if you do not trust yourself to do these.

Bring someone else – If you end up getting stuck when you are out off-roading, life will be a lot easier if you have a buddy with you. If you end up with an issue like a flat, having an extra person there can really be helpful.

Do not take unnecessary risks – It is quite easy to end up getting stuck when you are off-roading. There are so many things that can go wrong. So, taking a risk that you should not is not a smart decision. For example, be weary of water crossings unless you are a hundred percent certain that you can make it across without being swept away.

Plan ahead – Make sure that you plan ahead so that you are ready for things such as sudden inclement weather.

Conclusion

Off-roading in Puerto Rico is a great way to spend some of your time there. You can really experience the most beautiful parts of Puerto Rico when you go off-roading there. One of the most important things to remember is that you can only go off-roading in Puerto Rico with your own car, not with a rental. So, be sure that you have your car there.

Security measures

Preventing car theft is much more effective, inexpensive and less time consuming than recovering a stolen car is. That is why you must take every possible step in order to stop the theft of your vehicle before it even occurs. This goes for anywhere you are, not just in Puerto Rico. You can start with the free and simple steps. This will include never leaving your keys in or on your car, always keeping your doors locked, always keeping your windows closed when you are not in the car, and parking in a safe area which we will go more into later. You can also choose to get an additional security system installed.

In terms of added security systems there will be two main types, an immobilizer system and a tracking system. Typically, an immobilizer system will include a tracking system the not the other way around. We do recommend that you go with a security system for your vehicle that has both. This is because an immobilizer is used to disable your vehicle wherever it is once you notify the security company that your car has been stolen. A tracking system will obviously track your car after it has been stolen. With both, you simply stand the best chance of recovery. Keep in mind these systems can cost a bit of money. Typically, getting an additional security system for your vehicle will cost somewhere around two hundred dollars or so in 2021.

Safe places to park

As we mentioned above, where you park your vehicle will come into play in terms of preventing theft. If at all possible, try not to park in highly populated areas like San Juan. If you do have to park in a city with lots of people, try to park in a garage. If you are relegated to parking on the street, park in a well-lit area that has a lot of foot traffic and potential witnesses around. You can also be proactive if you are going to park in a big city and look up online where the safest places to park will be.

Wrapping up

Getting your car stolen is awful. It will end up costing you time and money. There is a decent chance that you might not even get your car back at all. If that is the case your insurance will cover most of the loss but likely not the full value of the vehicle. This is exactly why you must do everything within your power to prevent car theft from occurring in the first place. This includes keeping your doors locked, getting a security and tracking system as well as parking your car in places where it is least likely to be stolen.

Parallel parking on Puerto Rico’s crowded streets

In Puerto Rico, parking can be quite hard to find in the city areas like San Juan and Bayamon. It is the same situation as cities in America like New York or Los Angeles. Odds are that you will find yourself in a situation where you will need to parallel park in order to get a spot. That is why if you are not too good at parallel parking you should take the time to practice iif you live in Puerto Rico.

If you try and parallel park without the proper experience, you could end up bumping into another car and causing damage which you will be responsible for paying for. At the very least, if you do not know how to properly parallel park in Puerto Rico, you might end up missing out on quite a few available parking spots and having to walk several extra blocks or you could even end up paying for parking.

Advice for parallel parking

Parallel parking gets easier with the more experience that you have but it always should be done with extreme caution. The detail of making your job of parallel parking as easy as possible goes much further than just being careful. First, always make sure the spot you have found has more than enough room for you to park and not just enough. Next, you should be sure that your turn signal is on to alert the drivers who are behind you that you are in the middle of parallel parking and not just illegally double parked.

You must always also first check to ensure the spot in which you are about to parallel park in is a legal place in which to park. So, read all signage and check for things like fire hydrants as well. Finally, if you have a rear-view camera, absolutely make use of it. If not, make sure you have a clear view through your rear window because you will need to use it as you park.

Conclusion

Parking in populated city areas in Puerto Rico can be quite scarce. Unless you plan on walking, using rideshares, public transportation or always paying for parking, you will need to parallel park fairly often. Before you do attempt to parallel park, make sure that you are well practiced because you do not want to end up bumping into someone else’s car when you are doing so. Finally, always parallel park with caution, use your signal and pay close attention to what you are doing as you park.

How the weather will affect your battery in Puerto Rico

Your car will not run if your battery is not working. If your battery stops working while you are driving, your car will abruptly stop running which can be extremely dangerous for you and your passengers. This is why you need to take care of your battery. In Puerto Rico, the constant warm or hot weather can negatively affect your car battery health, so you need to make sure that you pay special attention to your car battery if you are in Puerto Rico.

The way that the warm weather will affect your battery is simply that heat significantly increases the amount of corrosion inside the battery. When this happens the lifespan of the battery gets decreased, the battery holds less of a charge and it might even lose the ability to start at some point.

In fact, according to AAA, battery-related calls nearly double annually during summer months. IT is for this reason you pay close attention to your battery and do whatever you can to keep it running well leading up to and during the summer months.

Advice for keeping your battery running well

There are a few things that you can do to off-set the effect of Puerto Rico’s heat on your battery. The easiest is to make sure that you use the car fairly often and do not leave it sitting in the sun for extended periods. That also means you should do whatever you can to keep the car out of increased temperatures such as keeping your car in a garage or at least in the shade when you are not using it.

You should also keep the battery clean and wipe it free of dirt, grim and whatever corrosion that you can. You should do that at least every other week. Finally, you should get you car serviced frequently. You should do that at least every few months and when you do be sure that you get your battery tested.

Conclusion

Battery health is crucial to the function of your car. You need to be vigilant about keeping your battery working at its highest efficiency. This means doing a few things yourself such as keeping the battery cleand and the car as cool as you can. You need to also be sure that you get your battery tested when you bring your car in for service which you should do at least every few months. If you need your car transported into or out of Puerto Rico you can always get a quote or find out more on Puerto Rico Car Transport’s website.
