fourth of july in puerto rico

Since Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, it takes part in all United States public holidays, which includes Independence Day. Fourth of July in Puerto Rico is celebrated much like it is in the United States. The island celebrates with live music, fireworks, and of course, a spin on the food with the incorporation of Puerto Rican food. Like the United States, many people celebrate Fourth of July in Puerto Rico by spending time with their family at festivals, the beach, or BBQs.

Old San Juan, specifically, the Plaza del Quinto Centenario, is a place to visit when celebrating Fourth of July in Puerto Rico. The plaza is known for its music, food, and fireworks. Staying in San Juan, you could also visit the Condado Lagoon for their Fourth of July celebrations. The Puerto Rico Tourism Company hosts a day long festival packed with live music and food stands. Food and drinks are from various vendors such as Craft Beer Expo, Urban Market, and Farmers Market. After a day of eating and drinking, there is a fireworks display that is synchronized with the Arturo Somohano Symphony Orchestra. About 45 minutes east of San Juan, the Wyndham Rio Mar Resort is home to a large Fourth of July festival. The festival runs all day long with food stations, salsa dancing, bouncy castles for kids, bull riding, and watermelon eating competitions. The day ends with a fireworks display. The actual day long event is free, but car parking is $10.

Although not an official Fourth of July celebration, The Annual Cattleman’s BBQ Competition takes place in July. At this annual competition, you can expect to see over 80 teams, 35 sponsors, and 15,000 hungry competitors. The competitors eat anything from steak, brisket, pulled pork, wings, hamburgers, and seafood.

car shipment

You have been researching mandated requirements for car shipment from Puerto Rico. Your head is probably spinning with the “Dos and Don’t” to car shipping and what is required. There are many forms that are mandated by the United States Border Protection. These forms are not optional and need to be completed fully and accurately prior to your car shipment’s departure. Shipping to different states and countries require different forms.

Although Puerto Rico is not a state of the United States of America, it is considered United States territory. Therefore, when considering car shipment from Puerto Rico, it is exactly that- a car shipment and not an export. As a result, there are no export duties. However, there is different paperwork that needs to be completed and filed so you can ship out of Puerto Rico. The Foreign Trade Regulations, or FTR,  mandates that shipping companies and customers file Electronic Export Information, or EEI. The Electronic Export Information is mandated for any shipment to the United States with the exception to Canada. Destinations that include the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands make EEI a requirement. This form is regulated by the United States Census Bureau. The Electronic Export Information is export data that is filed with the Automated Export System or AES. This data is equivalent to the former Shipper’s Export Declaration or SED. It is required by the United States Foreign Trade Regulations for exports of goods that are more than $2,500. Car shipment from Puerto Rico falls into this category, even though it is not considered an export. Your car shipment company will be responsible and knowledgeable in ensuring you complete the appropriate forms prior to your car’s departure from Puerto Rico.

puerto rico festivals

The best time to visit and/or relocate to Puerto Rico is in June. Beaches are now beginning to fill up, tourist spots are becoming more crowded, and hurricane season is just beginning so it isn’t in full swing just yet. June is considered one of the hottest months in Puerto Rico, but it is also the the busiest as far as events and festivals go. There are many Puerto Rico festivals occurring in June.

If you decide to visit Puerto Rico in June, you will have the opportunity to experience the SoFo Culinary Week which is when Calle Fortaleza (South Fortaleza Street) in Old San Juan becomes an outdoor street fair with tasting booths. More than five blocks are closed down for food vendors, music, and entertainment. There are at least 30 participating restaurants and a variety of cuisines. Some restaurants set up in the street, while others create makeshift bars so you can easily get a cocktail of your choice. If you enjoy food, be sure to visit Puerto Rico around this festival.

At the end of June you can’t miss Carnival in Rio Grande. Rio Grande is the “city of El Yunque” and each year they have a four day festival to celebrate Carnaval Ciudad de El Yunque. This festival is jammed packed with food, music, parades, carnival rides, and fireworks. It is one of the Puerto Rico festivals you do not want to miss. The first few days are opening ceremonies where you can expect to see live music and shows, and amusement rides. By the end of the week, you can attend the 10k race and parade. If you can only attend one day of this four day Puerto Rican festival, be sure to attend on Sunday, the last day. Sunday is considered the day of Carnival, where you can watch a variety of parades, see loud costumes, and hear cultured music. If you can’t attend this Puerto Rican festival at the end of June/ early July, try experiencing the “set up” for the event.  By mid- June the town begins to set up colorful decorations, amusement rides, and floats.

car import safety

The business of importing cars has been increasingly on the rise. As a result, the Department of Homeland Security has put together information for the United States Customs and Border Protection to ensure companies and people  are safely importing their car. Knowing import safety prior to your car shipment will give you a peace of mind. Whether you are importing your car to the United States or to another country, your car will have to go through customs. At customs, you will need to provide a Bill of Lading, registration, and any other documents connecting to your car. While our company will take care of your pick up arrangements, it is important to have documentation of your vehicle’s arrival date so that it is coordinated with customs. All car shipments are cleared at the port of entry unless otherwise noted. This will provide import safety for your car. Furthermore, in order to prevent the transporting of foreign soil, it is best that you completely wash the exterior of your car prior to shipment. Most importantly, for your own import safety, and to ensure you are safely importing your car, it is highly recommended you clean out the contents of your car. This will greatly reduce the risk of loss or stolen property during transport and/or when your car gets to the loading and unloading docks. Lastly, get familiar with EPA Standard Form 3520-1. This form is required by the United States Customs and Border Protections for the importation of almost all cars such as passenger vehicles and highway motorcycles. This required form is to confirm all vehicles meet the air pollution emissions standards and requirements. However, it is important to note that this form is not required if you are importing your car directly from a manufacturer since it is a new vehicle.

Before your shipment date, be sure to have all of the required documents filled out. But don’t worry, contact our office and we can help you with all of your car shipment needs and questions.

Research

Doing your research is extremely important. Typing into a search engine “Transporting Cars Overseas” and a variety of different companies will come up. So, how do you pick which company is best for you and your car shipment needs? Finding a reputable company is extremely important and looking for evidence of such should always be listed on the company’s website. You want to sure that the company you choose has credentials and certifications, licenses, and an insurance policy put into place.

Weigh your Options

There are many factors that go into the quote of your car shipment. Some factors include but are not limited to the season, shipping method, type of car, carrier type (open vs closed), location, customs clearance, country taxes, etc. Once you have a some quotes from different companies, you need to short out your information and weigh your options. Remember, while choosing the cheapest company may seem like the best option, especially for your wallet, cheaper is not always better.

Complete Paperwork

Once you’ve selected the company you will be using to ship your car overseas, you will need to prepare the paperwork. Paperwork includes a clear and original title, a copy of the bill of sale, and a copy of your passport. Some shipping companies require additional paperwork that is due upon departure and arrival. It is best to ask your company what else is needed.

Prepare You Car

Document your car to the best of your ability. This means interior and exterior pictures and reports of the condition. Do not leave any personal belongings in your car as they can become damaged and/or lost. In addition to you inspecting your car, the person at departure and arrival will also inspect your car.

Rules of the road in Puerto Rico

You have shipped your car or are thinking about shipping your car overseas to Puerto Rico. Having your car will allow you to explore the island and everything it has to offer. There are some rules of the road that are the same as the United States such as driving on the right side of the road and requiring every passenger to wear a seatbelt. However, there are some rules of the road that are not similar to the United States. Below are some rules of the road you should learn before setting out to explore.

The Difference Between Single, Double, Triple, Four Digit Autopistas/Highways:

Single- digit roads are considered to be “main” highways and you can expect a traffic light every couple of hours. Double- digit roads are considered to be “newer” highways and are known for having tolls. Triple- digit highways are smaller roads and are considered to be “country” roads. You will most likely not explore four- digit roads. These roads are usually one lane and are advised for people who know where they are going.

Rules of the Road That You Can Expect the Locals to Not Follow:

  • Although it is law to use blinkers to signal switching of lanes, many people don’t use blinders when turning or changing lanes.

  • Puerto Rico has a “no pass on the right” rule, but you can expect that the locals will pass in any lane. Like us, usually the left lane is the fast lane, and passing is done on the right. However, you can expect that the locals will drive slow or fast in any lane that they want.

  • If a local misses a turn, you can expect that they won’t continue on their path in order to find a way to turn around. Instead, they will stop suddenly and back up in order to get to their missed turn or exit that they wanted.

If you have any rules of the road questions once you’re in Puerto Rico, you could always stop and ask a police officer, as they are local in patrolling. However, if you are driving in front or next to one, don’t freak out when you see the patrol car blue lights on. The police drive around all the time with blue lights on. So don’t panic unless you hear sirens.

If you do not understand Spanish, there are some words you can learn to ensure you are safe on the road.

Pare- stop

Ceda- yield

Cuidado- caution

Salida- cxit

Transito- one way

Peaje- toll

Autopista- Highway or expressway
